Chapter Twelve

Azran

Ela and I hurry out of the tunnels and emerge from the mountain. Without pause, I lead the way down the rocky path. We need to get out of here as fast as possible. Braern will have heard about the raids, and reinforcements must be on the way.

The sun is rising rapidly in the sky, indicating we have now run out of time. Adrenaline still rushing through my blood, I sprint ahead to look for the horses. Only, they’re nowhere to be found.

Tracks hurrying away from the range mark the grounds. The rest of the unit must have taken our mounts with them, not wanting them to be found by rebels.

“Fuck.” Ela has come to the same conclusion.

I repress a smile. Swearing is like second nature to her. Right after arguing with everyone around her.

Without a second of hesitation, she heads north and breaks into a run. She’s the most strong-headed and determined Fae I’ve ever met.

I gladly let her take the lead, her smaller stature making it an easier pace for me to follow, given my state. What would have been a day’s ride just turned into two full days, and I need to conserve my strength.

We’re disadvantaged on foot, and we both know it, so taking a break is out of the question. Hours are beginning to blur together, and I lose all track of time as I focus on the back of her head. Her luscious brown hair is now crusted with blood and dust, reminding me of that piece of filth. I’m panting heavily, but rage keeps me going.

Ela looks back at me several times to confirm I’m following. I don’t need her distracted, so I regulate my breathing and dig my nails into my palms to keep the pain at bay.

I check the southeast every now and then to make sure we’re not being followed or chased. I squint my eyes at the horizon once more, and this time, dust is swirling in the distance. I catch up with Ela, pick her up before she can argue, and duck behind a small dune. I immediately crush her body with mine, trying to make us invisible and impossible to spot from a distance.

“Get off me!” She tries pushing me off, but I put my hand on her mouth and drop my gaze to hers, which silences her immediately.

I almost pull back when panic flashes in her eyes. I hate to be the one putting her in that state right after what she barely escaped. “Riders. Stay down.” She stills and does as I say.

My attention now entirely focused on the horizon, I try to discern where the riders are headed. Once I’m confident they’re not coming toward us, I relax and catch a glimpse of worry in her hazel eyes.

With my body against hers, there’s no hiding my slowing heartbeat and shortness of breath. Or maybe she’s worried about rebels finding us or about what I might be capable of doing to her in that position.
