Shopping for furniture is fun, and Zack seems to have an open budget. I've not asked about his finances, but he's already made some hefty purchases. I guess business is good.

Honestly, it feels like we're engaged and are buying tons of stuff for our future house. I get a pang in my chest. I want that so badly, but I must remember that relationships are not puppies and kittens; they need work. This one definitely needs some work. I think Zack is not being realistic about his mother's expectations, and I don't know how to communicate that to him.

We stop at a bakery and grab some treats. Zack knows I have a sweet tooth and indulges me whenever he can. Really, he's going to make me fat! He's looking at me right now, pleased with himself.

"What?" I ask, continuing to chew on my pain au Chocolat. He laughs. Laughs!

"You look so cute with chocolate all over your face."

I blush. So I'm a messy eater. I never claimed to be perfect. I make a face at him and continue to eat what I classify as bliss on earth. They say there's pain au Chocolat in every corner of France. That might be an exaggeration, but I might want to visit if that is the case. Finally, I finish eating and wipe my face.

"Better?" I squint at him.

"I...I liked it better before." He takes my hands in his. "So what else do we need for the apartment, apart from the furniture."

"Oh, tons of stuff. For example, the kitchen. But I think you should buy on a need-to-use basis. It's not like we are marking things for wedding a registry." Oops. What is it with me and my mouth today?

He comes closer to me as if he's going to tell me a secret.

"What if we were? Wou-would you mind that very much?" He asks. His expression is open and honest, and I'm ready to ask him to marry me right now, except I want him to do that. What I can share…

"I think that would be really fun and exciting. Zack, I…"

"I love you, Jessie." He rasps.

I open my eyes wide, surprised.

"I love you too, Zack," I confess as he leans forward to kiss me. I love Zack's kisses. They always make my heart pound, and I feel like a teenager kissing her first crush.

But my stomach is not agreeing with me because I have to bring the elephant back into the room. So I end the kiss and look firmly into his eyes.

"Your mother doesn't like me."

He starts shaking his head, but I put my hand up to stop him. "I've had a monster in law before, with David, my ex. It is a nightmare to have to deal with someone like that when you are in a relationship. They always interfere, and I end up getting hurt over and over again. I can't live like that." Tears burn in my eyes, and I lower my head to hide them from him.

"Jessie. I don't know why my mother acted that way, but she's not like that at all.
