Chapter 12

Doris was humming in her kitchen as she made tea. Ruth was opening and shutting the door leading out to the patio.

“When did you get the door fixed?”

“Two days ago. Harrison fixed it for me,” Doris said, dipping tea bags in their cups. “He took it off the hinges, shaved some wood off the bottom and top, and then put it back on. It’s worked like a charm ever since. It took him ten minutes. I still can’t believe it was so easy. All these years of it sticking… hell, I could have done that myself.”

Ruth closed the door with a quiet click and came to perch at the counter. Doris met her sister’s serene gaze and was happy to know she was supported.

“Talk to Mom and Dad lately?” Doris asked.

Ruth chuckled. “What did they do now?”

“Mom and Dad invited me to lunch last week so they could warn me off dating Harrison. I lasted a whole ten minutes. I delivered a scathing speech and left before the food came.”

Ruth giggled. “You’re not going to listen to their advice, are you?”

Doris laughed. “I wasn’t really planning on it. Do you think I should?”

“Are you kidding me? You’re glowing. Even if he leaves eventually, at least you’ve had a taste of what a good man is capable of making you feel.”

“I’m not sure I can handle getting sex advice from my baby sister. Does Tim make you glow?” Doris asked, setting her sister’s tea in front of her.

“If he did, I would just powder that shine away all day long. But if you’re asking me if he’s talented in bed… yes… very. It keeps getting better, and I don’t know how that works. I’m just grateful.”

Doris laughed and turned back to fetch her own tea. “Good to hear. I’m glad my sis is happy with her man.”

Ruth picked up her tea and sipped. “Since we’re swapping gossip, did you hear Avery is trying to divorce his baby’s mother? Vivian said Freddie told her. His father’s firm handles Avery’s money.”

“So much for the illusion of client privacy…” Doris mused, shaking her head.

“No. It’s not like that,” Ruth exclaimed. “It’s that Avery made such a big deal about divorcing you and marrying her. Now his denial of his child has struck a chord in a lot of people. How can he keep saying the baby isn’t his? He says he’s going to make her take a paternity test to prove parentage.”

Doris sighed heavily. “I know. He told me. He came to the office and asked me to handle his divorce.”

Ruth hissed. “The nerve of him…”

Doris snorted. “Yes—but you know—I had the feeling there was something he wasn’t revealing about the situation. There was a certain smirky sureness about him when he said it.”

Ruth tilted her head. “Doris, really. No one can be that neutral about their ex. You got divorced when her condition started to show. Any reasonable woman would have taken that same action.”

Doris smiled and waved her hand. “I don’t know why we’re talking about him.
