A couple of days later, construction was booming at the lot. Tripp and his crew were making quick work of the project, and the building was rising higher, seemingly with each hour. When the people of Glenwood Falls saw the construction work was continuing, it was as if they all breathed a collective sigh of relief.
I suspected that the construction work served as a sign of the passing of time for the townspeople. Suddenly, it seemed like people were beginning to put some distance between the new building and Coltonâs murder.
Hadley and I both noticed that more customers were flowing into our shops. People no longer seemed afraid to be out and about. She passed by the outside of the bakery and gave me two big thumbs up on her lunch break while I handled a sudden rush of customers who came in for an afternoon pick-me-up with their dogs.
Even I, the eternal ball of stress, was beginning to adjust to this new phase when a sudden wrench was thrown into the mix, and all the mental progress the town had made came to a screeching halt. The âwrenchâ came in the form of several broken windows.
One morning, I was on my way to open the bakery when I noticed police lights flashing next door. âOh, brother,â I muttered under my breath. âWhat now?â Silently, I prayed that there was not another dead body out front. I picked Max up and walked over.
âWhatâs going on?â I asked Tripp. He stood out front, scratching his head with one hand and holding his hard hat with the other. Sheriff Briggs was walking around the building with a deputy I didnât recognize.
âBroken windows,â he snarled, banging his helmet against the sidewalk in frustration. âSorry, Iâm really ticked off right now.â
âWhat happened?â I asked worriedly. âIs someone else hurt?â
âNo oneâs hurt, at least,â Tripp finally said. âBut someone came in the middle of the night apparently,â he took a deep breath to try to control his fury, âthey decided to knock out every single window weâd put in. There are bricks all over the place inside and glass everywhere. Itâs going to cost a fortune to repair, and itâs going to set us even further back. Those were custom-ordered windows with triple-glass panes. Only one of my guys is qualified to replace them, and heâs out this week. So, I will have to subcontract someone to do the job last minute so we can keep moving.â
âOh, no, Iâm sorry! Thatâs unbelievable.â While I was happy no one else was hurt, I couldnât believe another disaster had happened. âDoes Sheriff Briggs know who did it?â The Sheriff didnât look any happier to be out here so early in the morning, in the cold. I could overhear him gruffly, assigning orders to the deputy beside him. I held Max tightly to keep him warm from the chilly wind whipping around us.
âHe doesnât know. He said it was probably some prank by a couple of high schoolers.
