With the help of sleeping pills, Jack rested peacefully and woke up feeling like a new man. He had managed two days without a car, but his quest didn’t allow for a third. Of course, going back to his apartment wasn’t an option, so it was time to visit another rental agency.

At 9 AM, he went to Hertz. When he got his keys, he drove to Starbucks for coffee, and then continued to Thomas Robinson’s Brooklyn apartment. He called Robinson’s home phone to see if he was there. When Robinson answered, he hung up, drank his coffee, and waited in the car on the street.

He studied his environment. Robinson’s building was dark brown, the window frames white, and the trees outside abundantly green. A parking lot was located to the building’s right.

After waiting fifteen minutes, Jack took out his phone, logged in to a pseudonymous Gmail account, and tapped compose. In his email, he gave Emily details about Moore and asked her to investigate him while she was in Rochester. Ten minutes later, she hadn’t replied.

Some time ago, he had created multiple Gmail accounts with slightly different usernames and passwords. He was relieved that he had remembered the credentials because he hadn’t used an account for a while.

Five minutes later, an elderly woman and Thomas Robinson separately walked out of the building. Robinson continued to the parking lot and drove away in a silver Honda. Jack stepped outside with his laptop bag, jogged across the road into the building, and ran up the stairs to Robinson’s apartment.

As a kid, he had often spent time with his locksmith uncle. He still remembered that you needed two items to pick a standard lock: a tension wrench and a straightened safety pin. The tension wrench was a thin metal nail that was bent at a ninety-degree angle. You would insert it into the bottom part of the lock and press it down tightly. You would then jab the safety pin into the upper part of the lock. After a few jabs, you could turn the wrench to unlock the door.

Using his wrench and pin, Jack quickly opened Robinson’s door. He held his breath, walked inside, and sighed with relief when no alarm went off.

Robinson’s green Dell laptop sat on an untidy desk underneath a window. He had already been lucky with the alarm, so he chose not to mess with the laptop for the moment. Instead, he went to the filing cabinet on the desk’s right.

The top three of five cabinet drawers contained files of distinct PI cases, arranged chronologically. He quickly went through them, but saw nothing relevant to his case. It seemed strange that the files were neatly organized while the rest of the apartment was a mess.

The two lower drawers were full of information about a single corporate espionage trial. According to newspaper articles from almost a decade ago, the case had collapsed due to lack of evidence. Judging by the amount of new material in the drawers, Robinson was out to prove the court wrong.
