A firm, gentle hand rested on my shoulder. I jerked awake.

‘Wha—oh.’ I looked around. It was still dark, but the gelato had melted into a green pool in the tub. I must have fallen asleep at the table.

‘Imshorryalx,’ I mumbled, too groggy for separate words. I squinted as a light fell across the table. Alex was pulling his pre-prepared breakfast shake out of the fridge. He packed it into his backpack and filled a water bottle.

I took a breath and tried again. ‘Sorry I missed dinner.’

Alex smiled, but it didn’t quite fill the distance in his eyes. ‘It’s okay. Go to bed, Gabby.’

He leaned down to kiss my forehead, and then he was gone.
