Hurtling Through the Solar System

The speed with which the mysterious object was moving was much faster than that of any regular, orbiting object in the solar system. At the distances involved, the object was moving faster than the escape velocity of the Sun. It was clearly on course to exit the solar system completely. Rather than moving along a standard elliptical orbit, on a parabolic trajectory as it rounded the Sun, this new zippy little asteroid was traveling along what astronomers call a hyperbolic orbit (NASA 2017).
