The Cursed Four Kings of New Londo

During the prosperous Age of Fire, four humans developed ties with Gwyn, earning his confidence. The sovereign not only gave them a fragment of his Lord Soul, but also entrusted them with the leadership of New Londo, annex of the city of the gods. The council of the four new kings would oversee this city with its array of different cultures, brought by many humans from all of the world’s regions. Gwyn aimed to step up his control over the race in question–feeble yet troubling.

The Four Kings’ earthly power was as great as their hearts were weak. After all, they were implacably human. Thus, one day the Abyss came to New Londo: Kaathe went to see the Four Kings to offer them a new role, more gratifying than that of serving the whims of the gods. The Primordial Serpent also spoke to them of the age to come: the age of man.

At a time when the Fire still burned bright, fed with humanities collected by the Way of White, Gwyn continued to reign as the uncontested ruler. It was therefore risky for Kaathe to disturb the established order. He offered to grant the Four Kings the power to “lifedrain”9, likely explaining that it would slow the Fire’s supply and thereby weaken the gods. With burning ambition, the four sovereigns shamelessly accepted this offer to exploit their own species, using their humanities to fight their masters. In so doing, the foursome was serving Kaathe’s insatiable appetite and, indirectly, the Abyss. Their growing greed for humanities and their wish to please their new reptilian master led the Four Kings to establish the corps of Darkwraiths, ancient noble warriors who had been corrupted in their turn. They now were assigned to collect valuable humanities, as the Abyss began to encroach further on the city of New Londo. Corrupted by their new power and insatiable thirst for conquest, the Four Kings underwent physical and mental changes over time, until they resembled true specters, and sank into a murderous insanity that temporarily threatened their own species.

Catching wind of the events taking place in New Londo, Gwyn decided to flood the city. Monstrous waves washed over the city, which, at this point, had become a shadow of its former self. The Lord of Sunlight sent three of his Guardians of the Seal, identifiable by their long, thin staffs, their enchanting dark red robes and beak-shaped masks, recalling the masks worn by doctors in the Middle Ages who treated patients with the plague. They came to seal the doors of New Londo, and then remained in position to monitor the least bit of activity. Many years later, when the Chosen Undead arrives in the outskirts of the city, only one guardian remains10. Introducing himself as Ingward, he gives the hero the keys to the city when he notices that the hero is in possession of the Lordvessel. Frampt no doubt let this guardian in on the secret. Either way, he seems
