“Of course I’m happy.” Charli shot Matthew an are you shitting me glance as they pulled into the mini-mart parking lot. “Do you know how much I hate paperwork?”

One of the things she loved most about being a detective was getting out in the field. Sure, she also liked going over data back at the precinct. Using her analysis skills was also a perk of the job.

But the one thing she loathed was filling out requests for information and making phone calls where she had to deal with government bureaucrats.

Matthew scowled as he flung the passenger door shut. “Yeah, I guess.”

She walked around the front of her car. “Seriously, Matt. Just let them handle the parts of our case that are mind-numbing.”

Charli would never understand how Matthew could be so resistant to receiving help from the Feds, especially under these circumstances. As talented as Charli believed she was as a detective, there was no denying that a case like this could become overwhelming fast. The entire city was relying on them to find this killer. Now, they had some help with that suffocating burden.

The OPEN sign outside the mini-mart had been turned off, but there was still someone behind the counter. A younger man with long blond hair that curled around his ears was intent on some kind of task.

Charli pulled the door’s handle, surprised that it was unlocked.

The young man didn’t even glance up as he continued drawing something she couldn’t quite see. Charli peered over the counter where the kid was writing in graffiti style, his head bent low as he worked on the shading.

It was a sign. “Closed Until Further Notice.”

Charli knocked on the counter. “Hello…?”

The young man’s head jerked up, causing his blond locks to rise and fall as he yelped in surprise. “Sh…sorry. I thought the door was locked.” As he glanced between the two of them, Charli spotted earbuds in his ears.

She smiled to set his mind at ease and tapped her own ear, silently asking him to remove the buds. “It’s okay. I’m Detective Cross. My partner, Detective Church, and I would like to talk to you about your boss, Roger Stanton.”

He glanced back down at his sign. “Sure, what can I help you with?”

“Can you tell us your full name please?”

The young man picked up a badge that had been tossed onto the counter. “David,” was all it said. When Charli lifted an eyebrow, he blushed. “Sorry. Abby. David Abby.”

Matthew took a few steps toward the counter. “David, we were hoping you could tell us about the last time you spoke to Mr. Stanton.”

“Today. Just forty-five minutes or so before…it happened. But he didn’t say much, just that he’d be back in an hour.” He dropped his gaze to the floor, the weariness evident in his hazel eyes.

Charli could imagine what a shock it was to hear of his employer’s sudden passing, especially in such a brutal way. “How long did you work for Mr. Stanton?”

He rummaged under the counter, producing a roll of tape.
