“So,” Katie said. “What are the odds of the kidnappers releasing those three guys even if their ransom demands are met?”

“Well,” Casey began. “Seeing how someone had no qualms about killing a small-time hood who probably was involved in some way, the odds are not very good at all. And considering the FBI doesn’t appear to be in a big hurry to solve this one, the odds are probably getting slimmer.”

Katie had put all her tools in the back of her truck and slammed the tailgate shut. “Maybe we should have a word with Bonnie?” she offered.

Casey glanced across to where the three girls were still visible on the front veranda. “It might be difficult to get her separated from the other two, but yes, it might prove insightful.”

“Why don’t we take another look around up there?” ventured Katie. “We’re on this side of the security gate and we could drive up on the service road.”

“And if we get caught?” Casey asked with a raised brow.

“Plausible deniability,” Katie smiled. “We tell them we are inspecting that end of the ski-lift. They never told us directly to stay off the mountain. They told Teko.”

“And Teko told us,” Casey reminded her.

“I didn’t hear it,” Katie grinned.

Casey shrugged. “Why not?”

They climbed into the pickup and Katie drove slowly across the grass toward the dirt road that zigzagged up the mountain.

Once at the summit, Katie drove around to the rear of the lodge to keep the pickup out of sight from below. “Notice anything?” she asked.

“Yeah,” replied Casey. “We’re the only ones up here.”

“Some investigation.”

Together they ducked under the yellow tape that surrounded the building and entered through the rear door. The blood trail was still evident.

“So, this is where our dead friend in the cave came from,” stated Casey as they made their way through to the washroom.

“And this is where he began his trip,” added Katie. “Somebody face-planted him on the sink first to get his attention, then dragged him out of the building.”

“And transported him half a mile to where we found him,” Casey finished. “And used something big and sharp to finish him off. Let’s take a walk.”

As they walked along the trail toward the caves, they kept an eye out for any clues they might spot along the way. Katie also watched the sky. The ominous dark clouds that were swirling overhead warned of the storm that was approaching.

“Hey, what’s this?” Katie stepped into the tall grass along the side of the trail and retrieved a long, white strip of plastic. “A zip tie!”

Casey looked at what she held in her hand. “The kind they use as handcuffs when no handcuffs are available.” He examined the ground in the area nearest to them. The grass was flattened in a large part of it.

“You think this is where the guys were abducted?” Katie wondered. “And whoever did it, dropped a zip tie?”

“Good possibility,” Casey responded. He looked up and down the trail. “But which way did they go?”

“And how did they take them?” added Katie, pointing to several ATV tracks on the well-used trail.
