CHAPTER FIFTEEN
I'm always amazed that I can have energy to attempt to solve the world's problems at one in the morning, but a mere six hours later, I can't muster enough to get out of bed. Normally I would sleep a little later on Saturday. This is probably because Tan typically kept me up much later than usual on Fridays, not that I minded one bit.
This time it was my mind that kept rehearsing what I was going to say to Mrs. Cartwright when I called. Wanting to get the cobwebs out of my head before I picked up the phone, I slid over Tan to avoid waking Watson. You might think that unfair of me, but the smile on Tanner's face as my body became parallel with his indicated he didn't seem to mind one bit. I gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. "Not right now, lover boy. A pot of tea is calling my name."
His pre-smile yawn told me he wouldn't put up too much of a fight this morning. One more kiss and then I was on my way to the kitchen. Once my tea was steeping and Tan's coffee was brewing, I checked the clock. It was early here, but Camilla's family was on the East Coast. I dialed the number for the corporate office. I got voicemail, but the message assured me someone would receive my information and return my call as soon as possible. I waited for the beep.
"Hello, my name is Lilly Waters. I'm the barâ¦I'm one of the owners of Smugglers' Tavern here in Danger Cove, Washington. I've been involved in helping with the investigation of Mr. and Mrs. Cartwright's daughter's death. If you could ask one of them to return my call at their earliest possible convenience, I would appreciate it." I left my number and then disconnected with a small sigh.
Next item on my list was to text Vernon. I sent off my list of things I'd like him to check into for me if he got a chance. I hit Send with a smile. Funny what a couple boxes of treats from the Cinnamon Sugar Bakery could get you around here. In all fairness, the pastries were amazing.
"I don't suppose you have anything for breakfast, do you?" Tanner's deep morning voice soothed over my recent activity and brought me back to the equivalent of our lazy Saturday morning routine.
"I have food for Watson, but that's only because Mandi's mom sent it. If your boss lets you come in a little later today, could you maybe pick up some staples for the house?"
He crossed the short distance to the kitchen to give me a hug and one of his breathtaking smiles. The moment was ruined as Watson threaded himself in and out of our legs in an effort to direct our attention his way. Tanner ignored him and kissed me (which helped me ignore Watson too). When he broke the kiss, he smiled. "Not only will I obtain
