Chapter Twenty-One
Calin
âThis is ridiculous. Theyâve been gone for four days. Why arenât the wolves out there looking for them? God knows what could have happened to them.â
Oliver is pacing up and down the dining room, the same way he did yesterday and the day before that, the only difference today being how fast his strides are and how much swearing he's doing.
âThis is fucking ridiculous. You know that, right? There are people after her, vampires who want her dead.â
âI'm well aware of that. As is everybody in this house.â
The sound of his teeth grinding together reverberates through his skull, and I can hear it from where Iâm sitting all the way over on the other side of the room. Earlier today, he was out berating the wolves. Asking why they werenât doing anything. I know heâs worried, but that was taking things a step too far. Itâs not as if they donât have enough to worry about. Hence, I ventured out into the daylight to drag him back inside. Weâve been going around and around the same point for the last half an hour, and it doesnât show any sign of abating.
âTry and take a bit of comfort from the fact that they're still here. I assume, if the worst-case scenario had happened, they would be able to sense it.â
âWorst case scenario? You mean, as in they're dead? You know there are a hundred possibilities before it reaches that stage, all of which involve unthinkable pain and torture. Not to mention the fact that Naz isnât even part of the pack, so how would they be able to sense her? I just donât know why she had to run off like that. Why couldnât she at least have told someone where they were going?â
I watch the pain twist on his face, knowing that what heâs saying is a lie. And knowing that he knows it, too. Vampire hearing can have its advantages, but that wasnât the case four days ago, when I would have preferred not to have it.
I should have seen it coming, though. Iâve not been oblivious to the way Oliverâs heartbeat rises every time Narissa approaches. Nor how he would engineer things to ensure that she was never left alone with me. Not that she would have allowed anything to happen. No, I made my bed. Now Iâm having to lie in it. Which, I guess, is why I feel just the tiniest bit of sympathy for him. He messed things up between them himself, but that doesnât mean heâs not hurting.
âYouâre not to blame for her disappearing, you know," I say, as gently as I can.
Apparently not gently enough. He snaps his head around to face me, eyes narrowed, lips curled in a snarl.
âI bet you're just loving this, aren't you? I bet you're getting your kicks seeing how much Iâve screwed things up.â
âNo,â I tell him truthfully. âMy concern is for Narissa. For her happiness. Thatâs all that matters to me.â
He snorts, derisively, but thereâs less venom in the sound.
