Let's take the following context as an example: Cynthia's mom was on the phone with a friend as she sat in the living room. Suddenly, there was a crash from the next room. As she entered the room, she found out that a cookie jar had just been knocked off the table and crashed onto the floor. As she assessed the situation, she saw Cynthia standing next to the crashed cookie jar.

Mother - On a social or conscious level: "How did this happen?" This is a verbal inquiry from the adult in the adult to the adult in the child. However, the psychological or the subconscious level the mother has already deduced that it was Cynthia who broke the jar and she realized that she should have placed some child security measures in the room. The question she asked on the social level was merely for the sake of fact-finding which a subconscious bait was to get Cynthia to lie about the incident.

Cynthia - On the social or conscious level: “Daniel did it.” The psychological or the subconscious level came up with a defense because she knows the result of her mother's anger. This would have been an easy way out if Daniel hadn't left the house with their dad on an errand some minutes earlier.

Mother - On the social or conscious level: Hits Cynthia and tells her how much she abhors lies. She switches from the adult to the child which is the most crucial parent ego state to Cynthia's vulnerable child ego state. On the psychological or the subconscious level, the mother's payoff was that feeling of surprise that indicates a fit of righteous anger which was a confirmation for her belief in the fact that children are generally mischievous.

When her anger subsides, the game comes to an end. Having been able to recollect herself, she put her adult and parent ego state into play, and she began to feel terrible for overreacting.

When we take a critical look at the above example, one would find that the mother had placed herself at the level of a prosecutor. This is a psychological mind game that is often described as “now I’ve got you” and Cynthia had to learn the victim game that is known as “kick me.”

The only thing Cynthia had to do to disarm her mother was for her to have told the truth and her mother would not have been able to play her game. Unfortunately, she decided to depend on her instinct as a result of the fact that she is yet to gather enough experience. For the sake of the preservation of herself, all her instinct said to her was that she should stay away from any possible harm by lying.

This sudden change in the ego state of the mother gives room for intensity which, if it is combined with repetition, will burn the instructions of the game to a network of neurons that Cynthia is likely to take with her into the relationships she will form later in her adult life.
