Chapter Twenty

“What on earth is that?” Misti sat up, her head spinning to the window, eyes wide. “It sounds like the heart is being ripped out of an animal … a wolf. The poor beast is in such pain. Can we go and help?”

Asher dashed to the glass, gazing out into the waning light. “I’ve no idea. It sounds like a wolf, but I can’t make out who it is. I know all of ours, yet I’m unsure who it is. I’m going outside, I want you two to stay here.”

“What? You can’t be serious.” Savannah rushed up to him, shaking her head. “You’re not going out there on your own. Whatever that thing is, it’s obviously in pain, hurt, injured, and we all know how dangerous a wounded animal can be. Not to say the obvious here, but it could be a ploy to get you to leave us alone.”

Asher looked around the room, out into the waning gloom, then back at Savannah. “We’ve not had any news from the alert Phaedra put up. It’s not them, hon, so it’s something else. I need to go check it out. It’s hurt, whatever is out there is in pain. I gotta go see what it is and if I can help.”

“What alert?” Misti looked over at them, confusion over her face.

“Phaedra’s spell, she finished it, then she put together a group text. I received one earlier when we were out for our walk, just to let me know about it. If anything happens with her spell, then we’ll all get a text. I’ve not received anything so it’s nothing to do with any of them arriving.”

Misti shook her head, then glared at them both, crossing her arms around her. “Neither of you thought to let me know about this?”

“Sorry,” Savannah apologized.

Another shriek pierced the night, causing Misti to jump and go join them, her eyes wide, her hand reaching out to touch the glass. Her face white, her body shivering. “Okay, please go help. I want to as well, but I guess neither of you would agree to that, so, you go and see if you can find whatever it is. Help it, Ash, because it sure as heck needs someone. We can’t leave it out there in such agony.”

“Hey, did you hear that?” Levi appeared from the hall, causing them all to jump.

“Jesus, Levi! Don’t do that!” Ash spun around. “Don’t creep up on me like that.”

“I didn’t creep, I arrived quietly. Anyway, I assume y’all heard that? What the hell do you think it is?”

“Something in pain,” Misti replied, but her eyes were still locked on the glass, staring out into the dark.

“I was just about to go see if I could find whatever the hell it is. Maybe help, if I can.” Ash stepped toward Levi. “It sounds like it’s hurt. We can’t leave it like that.”

“Leave it? What is it? I’ve never heard anything like it before. Have you?” Levi looked pointedly at Asher.

“No, but it
