Chapter 13

The city was noisy and busy. Far too many people and the air smelled bad. Max could taste the pollution on his tongue. The tall faceless buildings blocked the sky and trapped him like a rat in a maze. He couldn’t wait to leave.

He glanced at Atti beside him. His head was down, and he was concentrating on a cloaking spell. He didn’t look any happier than Max. It was strangely reassuring and stole his heart a little more.

Max spotted the cheap budget chain hotel and crossed the road. Atti seemed content to follow and let Max take the lead. Max took his rucksack off and fished for his wad of bills and fake ID. He carried the rucksack over one arm and pushed open the door to the hotel reception.

It was tiny and basic but clean. The receptionist was a young guy with a shock of red hair who looked incredibly bored. His pale blue uniform shirt was wrinkled.

Max asked if they had any rooms available, and the kid nodded and started tapping at his computer. "Twin or double?" he asked and then glanced up and looked embarrassed. Max saw his brown eyes fix over his shoulder, presumably onto Atticus, who had dropped his cloaking spell.

Max frowned and turned his head and saw that Atticus was leaning in the doorway, arms crossed, eyeing up the kid appreciatively and blatantly. Atti’s hazel eyes were pure “come to bed” seduction.

Max shook his head in disgust and turned back to the receptionist. Max didn’t think the kid was even gay, but the poor man flushed and started stammering, completely helpless under Atti’s attention.

It was unnecessarily cruel. It made them unnecessarily memorable. It made Max unnecessarily jealous.

Max snatched the keys out of the kid’s hand and stomped off in the direction the kid had shakily pointed toward. Silently, Atti followed.

Halfway up the stairs, Max realized the receptionist had forgotten to ask them any details or to check for ID. Which was good, especially as he didn’t have any ID for Atti.

His bad mood lifted a little with the knowledge that there had been a purpose to Atti’s behavior, but then he became annoyed at how much Atti’s flirting had rattled him.

He opened the door to the room. A double bed, a long desk under a mirror with a tiny kettle and tea-making facilities on it. One blue armchair. A TV on the wall and a bathroom to the side. All fairly clean.

Max dumped his rucksack under the desk. Atti closed the door and went to look out of the curtain-covered curtains.

"I’ve always wanted to go to Paris. And to Rome. Oh and Iceland to see the northern lights. All I need now is a passport," said Atti happily to the window, as if he didn’t have a care in the world.

Max felt like he had been punched in the gut. Here it was, the confirmation that Atti thought nothing of him and was planning on parting ways as soon as possible.

"You’re not going anywhere," Max growled.
