Chapter Seven

Knight released a harsh breath as she dropped the butt of her rifle down and leaned heavily onto it. She stared down at Darius’ unconscious form. “You’ll thank me later,” she whispered.

Several men sounded off to each other, searching for survivors now that the mayhem had passed. Cooper jogged up to her, his eyes wide and glistening with adrenaline. “You all right there?”

Knight nodded and couldn’t help but pass a compulsive glance at Darius.

Cooper drew to a halt, then followed her look. “Holy shit, how’d he get out?”

“I don’t know.”

Cooper gave an offhanded shrug. “Well, at least he’s a dead alien.”

Knight winced. “He’s not dead, just unconscious.”

Cooper jerked up his weapon, and she instantly reacted, her hand knocking aside the rifle. “He saved my life.”

He blinked several times as though she’d just given him some complex mathematical question to answer. “What the fuck? This is a war, Sarge. It ain’t tit for tat.”

“Don’t you think I know that? His DNA is almost the same as ours. He’s human.”

If it were possible, Cooper’s eyes widened even more. “Are you fucking kidding me? Look at him. He isn’t human.”

“He was once,” she murmured.

“What?”

She stared at Cooper, noting the confusion and fear in his eyes. “These Samites were once human. The original aliens somehow managed to alter our DNA and thought processes.”

Cooper’s Adam’s apple bobbed furiously, a pale wash running over his features. “What the fuck? What the fuck, man?” he said, his voice pitching an octave in his terror. “You telling me, we might become one of those things?”

She nodded.

“Jesus, Mother Mary and Joseph. Fuck! We’re dead meat.”

At that moment, Vaughn and a few other men entered the docking bay, blood and dirt lining their faces. Vaughn barked some commands, and several of the soldiers hurried to do his bidding. His gaze scanned the room and upon sighting her, he walked over.

“Glad to see you still alive.”

“Yeah, I’m not about to let those things take me.”

He opened his mouth to say something, but paused, his eyes narrowing on Darius. “How the hell did he get out?”

Cooper glanced desperately between the two of them. “Don’t know, sir.”

“He managed to pull himself from the immobilizer, sir,” she said.

Vaughn’s lips thinned. “You were there when it happened?”

“Yes, sir.”

“I would’ve thought you’d have subdued him for the safety of the men.”

“We were attacked not long after he released himself. I didn’t have time.”

Vaughn’s displeasure made her feel like a private under the censure of her Drill Sergeant. “I need you on the ball, Knight. Those things are out there and we’re lucky we got away with what we did.” He sighed then rubbed his forehead. “Just dispose of the body.”

Knight cringed. “He saved my life, sir.”

A frown drew a line across his brow. “You telling me he isn’t dead?”

“No, sir, he’s alive.”

Vaughn shifted on his feet, his stance becoming aggressive. “You better finish the job, Knight. Hoo-ah?”

Her lips pursed together. She wasn’t about to murder Darius. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”

“What?”

“Sir, he knew they were coming.
