CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“I don’t know,” Sam muttered, staring through the one-way mirror at the suspect seated in the precinct’s interrogation room. “I guess I just assumed it would be a man.”

Dana, rubbing a neck that ached from the whiplash of their crash, wasn’t entirely surprised by Sam’s assumption. In her profession, the majority of their suspects were men. But she knew better than to rely on such biases; she had learned early in her career that anyone—man or woman—was capable of anything.

The woman, bundled up in her gray hoodie, sat silently and motionless in the cold, sterile room, her eyes vacant as they stared at the metal table before her. She seemed worlds away from the frantic, desperate woman they had apprehended on the side of the road.

After arresting the woman, they’d performed a brief search of her car, during which they had discovered a nine-millimeter hidden beneath the seat and a large bag of white powder taped to the underside of the wheel well, covered in mud from their forest chase. Dana was a little surprised the woman hadn’t tried to use the gun.

Then again, maybe she’d realize it would only make things worse.

The door behind them opened and Officer Trask strode in, peering down at his phone. "The car is registered to a Juanita Jones,” he said, glancing up at Dana and Sam. “No priors, outstanding warrants or connections to other cases we’re looking into."

"Who's Juanita Jones?" Dana asked, her gaze fixated on the woman in the cold room.

“No idea,” Trask said. “A nobody, as far as I can tell.”

“You sure?” Sam asked, his voice low but with an undercurrent of tension. “You’re not just holding out on us again?”

Trask stiffened. Dana, not at all interested in sitting through another argument, sighed and shook her head. “Listen, you two need to bury the hatchet, okay? I get that his remark about Kenneth Ballard upset you, Sam—”

“He has no respect for vets, no idea what we’ve been through,” Sam said, crossing his arms. “Besides, that lead about the car? He should’ve told us much sooner. If he can’t competently do his job—”

“Do my job?” Trask said, turning red. “I didn’t ask for you two to come down here and take charge of this case, alright? This was supposed to be my case—they're moving me over to homicide. Just haven't made it official yet." He shook his head bitterly. "The only reason you got called in is because of that letter about the Constitution, so now everyone thinks this is being done by some 'Constitution Killer' fellow. And since you're the 'experts' on him, they roll out the red carpet for you."

So that’s why Trask doesn’t like us, Dana thought. She’d been getting a strange vibe from him from the beginning. She’d assumed it was simply that he felt uncomfortable around Feds, but now she understood the true reason. This was personal.

"Look, we're not trying to undermine you here," she said, her voice steady and calm despite the rising tension in the room.
