A few days had passed, and while the manhunt for Remi Coulson was still on, all the leads had grown cold. Nobody knew where he was or even had an idea if he was still in California. Hall and Charlotte had just gotten back to their apartment after talking to a few people that knew Carly Learson, still trying to get a better grip on what had happened. They sat down at the kitchen table and started talking when Hall’s phone rang. It was Bradham.

“Hey, what’s up?” Hall said.

“I’m gonna ask a favor of you.”

“Sure, what is it?”

“It pains me to even say this, especially since you’re not on the force. I shouldn’t even be asking this of a civilian.”

“What’s the problem?”

“Thurmond got kicked loose this morning.”

“He’s out of jail?”

“Yeah. He buckled up and got a lawyer, recanted everything he said, said he made the statements under duress.”

“That’s a crock.”

“Yeah, but it is what it is,” Bradham said. “We don’t really have any evidence to corroborate anything he said right now, so the superiors told me to drop the charges for now.”

“What about the girlfriend?”

“She got kicked loose a couple days ago. We didn’t really have anything that could stick on her either.”

“So what do you need me for?”

“Could you keep an eye on him for me?”

“Who? Thurmond?”

“Yeah.”

“What for?”

“’Cause he’s involved in all this up to his neck,” Bradham replied. “And right now, he’s the only one still alive who can talk about it. Whoever this Ripper guy is, he has already had Coulson take out the other members of the group.”

“And you think he’s gonna do it to Thurmond too?”

“I dunno. Unless Thurmond’s in really good with this guy and Ripper doesn’t think he’ll talk, maybe not. But it seems to me like Ripper’s trying to tape off all the loose ends. Thurmond’s the last one in the group that can lead us to Ripper.”

“Coulson could too.”

“If we could find him, which we can’t. We can find Thurmond, though.”

“I don’t understand what you need me for,” Hall said. “Just put one of your guys on him.”

“I can’t. I don’t have a spare man for the job. We’re buried in cases, overloaded in suspects, overworked and undermanned. I tried and got shot down. Superiors won’t approve tailing someone like Thurmond unless there’s a specific threat, and I can’t say that there is. It’s just a feeling. The only other way we could get a man on him is if we got specific information that he’s planning a crime or planning to meet with someone, and I can’t say for sure on that either.”

“So that’s why you’re coming to me.”

“That’s why I’m coming to you.”

“I’m the backup plan.”

“Hey, you wanted in, I let you in. If you wanna stay in, I’m giving you the option.”

“And I don’t ever get the runaround on any future cases?” Hall asked, trying to play his cards right. He was planning on helping out his friend anyway, even if he said no to his request. But it didn’t hurt to ask and get something out of it, regardless.
