A couple of years down the road, Rose continued his conversation with Doc Paterson. âAnd if Billy Brown donât quit settin his goddamn lines on top of mine thereâs gonna be hell to pay.â
Doc Paterson was the only name anyone knew him by. He showed up in Marathon about the time Rose did, and after a short stint as a fish house flunky, he made a trip with Rose to Cochinos on a boat owned By spank. He and the young Italian hit it off right away, so when Rose bought his own offshore boat Doc stayed with him. Before long, Doc considered Rose his family. He claimed he had been a successful doctor in California until a lawsuit wiped him out and his wife moved in with her dentist lover. He signed the divorce papers and left town to start a new life. A lifetime love of the worldâs oceans brought him to the Florida Keys where he planned to remain. He also claimed to have no living relatives, so wherever Doc was he considered it home and whoever he was with, he considered them family. Most considered him a likable old fellow but a bit pretentious. One of the locals who had been a deck hand for over twenty years commented, âWho the hell ever heard of a goddamn boat nigger readin Shakespears and Pluto and all them other books he says heâs read? I think heâs fulla shit mâself.â
âCanât figure out,â Doc said, âwhy the man always sets on top of us no matter where we go. Cochinos, Cay Sal, hell he even follows guys out here on the shoreline.â Doc polished off his glass of warm rum. âDrink up Capân, next oneâs on me.â
Lola brought the two fishermen a fresh drink and rested her huge breasts on the bar as she spoke to Rose. She smiled her best and said, âRose darlin, when you gonna take me along for another trip?â When she smiled she stuck her tongue between the half-inch gap in her horse-like front teeth. âIâm needin a vacation bad.â
âOne of these days Lola Iâm gonna tell you to pack your bag and weâll do Cochinos or Cay Sal again, Iâm about ready for a good cook on board again.â
Lolaâs tongue shot back in like a spooked snake. âCook my sweet ass. Next time we go to sea together Iâm gonna get you in the sack and then you ainât gonna want me outa there long enough to light the damn stove.â Her grin was hideous but sincere. When a customer yelled for drinks Lola headed his way.
As soon as she was outa hearing distance Doc said, âShe wonât have to pack a bagâshe is one.â
Rose chuckled, âThatâs the only woman Iâve taken to sea that I didnât screw, and youâre the only man I ever offered one of âem to, and you wouldnât screw her either.â He looked over at her chatting coyly with a man old enough to be her grandfather. âPoor old bag, bet her ego was shot for a month.
