CHAPTER 29
My well-laid plans of waking early and cooking pancakes for Max didnât become a reality. Instead, I woke up to chatter outside my bedroom window and a loud rapping on my door. I stumbled out of bed and rushed to the door first, where I found a sleepy-eyed Max outside.
âYouâre in trouble,â he announced, pointing at my window. He shuffled away right after pronouncing his dire verdict.
I parted the blinds a little to look outside. My heart skipped a few beats. Lara? Talking to DeeDee? What the hell? Max was rightâI was in trouble. DeeDee had no business being outside her quarters and Lara shouldnât have been home so early. Yet, here they were, talking. I grabbed a jacket and ran down the stairs.
âI only meant to help,â DeeDee was saying when I hurried up behind Lara.
âYou put her up to this?â Lara demanded of me, a frown firmly etched on her forehead.
Up to what? Hell, I had no idea what she meant. How could I put anyone up to something I didnât even know about?
âWell, I . . . no!â I shook my head with vehemence. âWhat in the world are you talking about anyway?â
âThat!â Lara wagged a finger furiously at the side of the house. It still took me a few seconds to understand she was showing me the shrub border, in particular the section of it that was perfectly clean of weeds. I deduced that was DeeDeeâs handiwork.
âOh, that! Well, she did a good job,â I said, shrinking back as soon as Laraâs eyes turned dark with accusation. âBut, no! I did not ask her to do that.â
âMiss Natasha didnât tell me anything,â DeeDee piped up. âI-I was simply trying to pay you back for letting me stay here last night.â Lara frowned at DeeDee and stood with crossed arms while DeeDee continued. âI know you canât like me being here and any other time I wouldnât have stayed either. But . . . last night, I-I was a bit scared. And Iâm grateful you let me stay. I wanted to thank you and it looked like this place needed some cleaning, soââ
Lara inhaled sharply. I could tell she was having a hard time being angry with DeeDee. We didnât know the kid, but it was hard to ignore that she was just a child. I mean, how do you kick out a homeless kid knowing the world out there? It wasnât like decades ago when the government would swoop in to protect minors. Those safety nets didnât exist anymore. Now people died and no one cared. Not even if they were fourteen-year-olds.
âAt least donât do that bare-handed,â Lara said finally. She nodded at the large trunk where we stored the garden equipment. âThere are gloves in there. Get a pair.â
I followed Lara back to the house. She barely even spared me a glance.
âIâm making pancakes,â I announced cheerily, hoping it would break the unbearable silence.
âOkay.â
Oh well. So much for breaking the silence. Lara threw her bag down and crashed on the couch, so I hovered.
