Over 20" cutt-bow caught on the lower section of Slough Creek. Deformed mouth area could have been caused by carelessly removing a barbed hook. Don Miller photo.

Thoughts on Landing and Releasing Trout Alive

I always get large trout on the reel to prevent tangles while moving with the trout and avoid breaking it off. I don’t strip line to play big fish. In fact, I only strip line to bring in small fish. By using a Velcro stopper at my rod tip (this will be explained in Chapter 9 – Equipment) it prevents my line from sliding from the rod tip to the reel: the line should be straight. This straight line is achieved by placing line under the forefinger of the hand holding the rod grip, causing slight tension from the Velcro at the rod tip. From the line held by the forefinger to the reel I want a small loop of line so that when I hook the trout I can release my forefinger and the small loop will put the trout on the reel immediately.
