We’re still dressed in our business clothes that we initially prepared for the Board meeting, and Andrew and I don’t look out of place in line at all. We have to wait for the better part of an hour to make it to the door, and the bouncer checks out our IDs casually, waving us inside without a second thought.

It’s like night and day inside the club. Pink strobe lights flash on and off, a subwoofered bass-line pounds away at the very foundation of the building we’re standing in. There’s a crowd as far as the eye can see, twisting and shaking on a dance floor below. There’s a bar to our left, packed so far back you can hardly see the lone bartender scurrying to fill all the orders in front of him.

“So, what do you think?” I holler up at Andrew. He nods, craning his neck to get a better look at the place around us.

“Looks nice!” he calls back. I nod, and together we make our way to the outskirts of the dance floor. The mosh pit’s made up of all types of people; young and old, fat and thin, ages and races of all possible demographics. Nobody’s excluded here, nobody’s out of place. I can see an old dad shaking about wildly in a Hawaiian shirt, I see men and women in three-piece suits tearing up the dance floor. I start to sway my hips back and forth to the beat, and I look over at Andrew, giggling.

But Andrew’s as stiff as a board. It’s like he’s never danced before in his life.

“You good over there?” I holler up at him. He nods, staring intently at the mosh pit in front of us.

“Yeah, I just—I just don’t dance,” he says.

Oh, you don’t dance? Yeah, right.

“Bullshit!” I call out, and I grab Andrew’s hand without a second thought, dragging him into the mob. He stumbles after me, and I pull him over to a more secluded area as the crowd shifts to give us some room.

He’s never looked as good as he does right now. Those sleeves, rolled up, exposing a hint of forearm muscle. His powerful gaze staring down at me, confused as ever. I can’t help but giggle at him, he looks like a regular fish out of water.

I grab his other hand, holding them both close to me as I pull Andrew in, swaying gently to the beat.

He grins, playing along. He starts shifting his weight from one foot to the other, swaying along with me as his hands grip mine tight. I watch in real time as Andrew loosens up, carefully at first, but with more confidence in each and every step.

I can tell he’s having a good time. And so am I.

I take back what I said about our road trip.

I don’t ever want this to end. This moment. This night. Being here with him changes things, and I don’t want to see what this city is like without Andrew by my side.
