“Hey, Siri, call Kyle Miller.” I set the cruise control once I was back on I-64.

“Calling Kyle Miller, mobile,” my phone said from the little rack Joey had attached to my air vent so I could see maps and answer calls more safely. It was the middle of the day on a Wednesday, but Kyle usually made time for me. And Bonnie’s comment about guns had me wondering a few things Kyle was in a good position to help answer.

“Nicey, you okay?” Tension thrummed in Kyle’s voice when he picked up, like he expected me to say I was in the middle of a shootout between the cops, the mafia, and a street gang and needed backup. It was getting to be a regular enough tone from him that I was a little offended.

“Have you guys had an eye on any massive gun purchases into or out of Fluvanna County? Maybe in the past two or three years?” That was the county where Aryk’s body was found rather than the one where he lived, but part of my theory was that maybe Aryk had gone out that way for a weapons purchase that went terribly wrong. Anything major should’ve at least been on the ATF’s radar.

“Fluvanna?” Kyle hummed a toneless rhythm that told me he was thinking. “It doesn’t ring a bell, but I’ll look into it.”

“Thanks, Kyle.”

“You’re not going to tell me what this is about?”

“I’m not really sure yet. Just following a hunch.”

Kyle chuckled. “A hunch related to DonnaJo’s eavesdropping in the courthouse elevator?”

“She told you about that, huh?”

“I’ll take that as a yes.” Kyle’s voice took on an edge. “Be careful, Nichelle.”

Why was everyone in my life always telling me to be careful? I’d never gotten into trouble I wasn’t able to get out of. Well, okay, maybe I occasionally called in the cavalry…and maybe the cavalry sometimes got shot…and maybe I also sometimes got shot, cavalry or no.

I suppose that’s why they keep the warnings coming.

“I’m always careful,” I said, trying to play flippant.

“Right. I’m a phone call away. And please don’t wait until you’re in too deep to ask for help.”

“Let me know if you find anything about guns in Fluvanna.” I ignored his last comment.

Kyle sighed. “You got it.”

“Thanks, Kyle.” I touched the red button to end the call.

I had a few more minutes left in traffic before I’d arrive at the Week office, which gave me plenty of time to puzzle over what I’d learned. If Aryk was hoarding guns and even telling his wife—as she was leaving him—that she needed to keep guns around, then he probably fell in with similarly gun-obsessed and paranoid people.

Maybe a deal went south. Maybe Joey was right, and there really was nothing more connecting Mervin and Aryk than a hatred of people who weren’t like them.

Second Star to the Right blared, and I touched the talk button, switching the call to speaker. “Clarke.”

“Hey, Nichelle.”

“Aaron, how’s your day?”

“Oh, I’ve been better. I just talked to Mr. and Mrs.
