Chapter Eleven

Robin sat down in the car. It was a credit to Lory’s discreetness that he didn’t ask her about what had happened. Robin started the car, her mind in turmoil and exhaustion settling in her bones.

“Some mess, huh?” Robin said.

“Some mess,” he confirmed.

“And to think after all that, we still don’t have an idea of what happened to Serene,” she said, resting her head against her car seat.

“I think it’s pretty obvious,” Lory said. “Salvador is behind it.”

“Maybe,” Robin said. “But the way he talked about his mother, it’s disheartening to believe that he would do something like that.”

“Well, let’s hope we find out something from forensics tomorrow,” he said. “Right now, it’s the only lead we have.”

“There must be something,” Robin said. “We just aren’t looking in the right place. I mean, who would want to hurt some poor woman who is too scared even to leave her house?”

“Maybe someone who wanted revenge on Salvador?” he asked. “Some victim’s relative, who couldn’t get to Salvador, so they did the next best thing?”

Robin looked at him thoughtfully, frowning. It was a good theory, and it made sense.

“We could start looking at possible victims and their immediate family–” Robin trailed off, something occurring to her.

“What?” Lory asked, all too familiar with the look on her face.

“Peddler!” Robin gasped.

“Well, I know what they do is illegal at times, but I don’t see how going after them–” Robin cut off Lory by waving her hands excitedly.

“That old man,” she said. “He said that he heard the peddler going about with his pots and tins. Maybe he saw something?”

“Finding him will be rather hard,” he said, frowning.

“He said that he comes there usually at the same time the woman was murdered,” Robin said. “There is a good chance we will find him there.”

“Let’s go then,” Lory said. Robin started the car and pressed the accelerator. She wondered if she would find the peddler and if he would even remember what happened. She needed to find out what happened to Serene. Robin partially blamed herself for it. She wondered if the reason Serene was dead was that she had helped Robin. Is that why Richard Salvador had killed her because Robin had involved her in all of this?

By the time they reached the apartment complex, there was silence everywhere. The lights were off, and the residents of the dingy apartments were asleep. Robin sat there, her heart racing and her senses alert. After a few minutes of silence, she started to wonder if perhaps she had come here for naught. And then, the sound of metal clinking and banging filled the air. From a distance, a man appeared dressed in shabby rags. On his back, he carried a huge backpack filled to the brim with various things.

“There,” Robin said.

Robin and Lory jumped out of the car, making their way toward the peddler.

“Hey!” Robin shouted. “Hey!”

The man turned to face her, looking confused.

“Hey,” Lory said. “I am Detective Travers, and this is Detective Matthews. I was wondering if we could ask you a few questions.
