Chapter Sixteen
We finally shook off our shock and scampered to our feet, chasing after all the supplies and the sculpture.
This was like that cartoon King Arthur movie.
I couldnât find Lady Justice. âWhere is she?"
Belle turned, her arms full of brooms and mops. âI don't know. She's so small."
I glared at the dog who was still curled up on the chair, ignoring the chaos raging around him. âTeddy, perhaps you could make yourself useful and track her down."
He yawned wide. âYou're the fool who decided to bring to life a blind-folded woman with a sword in her hands fixated on justice. What did you think was going to happen?"
"Nothing. Which is what did happen at first."
There was some kind of time delay. Whether because the inkwell and quill needed a moment to bond before the magic worked or if it was malfunctioning, I had no clue.
Teddy stretched, taking his sweet time as I searched beneath every piece of furniture âObviously, she waited until your guard was down. Or perhaps the magic needed a moment to work. Which means we should abandon ship, let her and the magic have this house."
I ignored him and turned back to Belle who had even more cleaning supplies in her arms. âShould I try writing more? Cancelling everything?"
Jules backed into the room, being chased by a spray bottle who kept spitting him with a lavender cleaning solution Belle made. âIt's worth trying. We'll watch your back while you try to undo this and please, Teddy, would you help?"
"Of course. I'll sniff out her hiding place no problem." Teddy finally jumped to the floor.
I spared a moment to roll my eyes at the complete one-eighty the mutt conducted when Belle asked him for the same thing I did. I perched on the edge of the couch, clutching the pen and ink to my chest as I wracked my brain for a fix to this.
The magic fled from all the objects, returning them to their original state.
Nothing changed. Magic still sparked through the air. Belle and Jules continued to wrestle with cleaning supplies.
I wish everything went back to normal.
Nothing.
Those brought to life by magic and mystery are frozen in time.
It finally worked. A little too well.
Even the dust particles swirling through the air stopping moving.
My limbs refused to obey me. âOh no.â
At least I could still talk.
âWhat did you do?â Julesâ voice came out clenched and awkward.
I slid my gaze over in their direction, finding Jules and Belle frozen too.
Now none of us could move. It worked. But not the way I meant it to. What was I supposed to do now? I couldn't move.
"Are you two alright?" I asked.
"I've been better. I can't move." Belle sounded strangely calm.
"Yeah. That's my fault."
"Is it going to wear off?" Jules asked.
"I hope so. But I can't move to write anything else. I'm just making it worse anyway."
"Okay,â Belle said. âWell, while we're trapped here and they can't do anymore damage either, let's talk this out."
I wouldâve nodded if I couldâve. âAlright.
