CHAPTER ELEVEN

“Annie’s building a greenhouse and doesn’t have enough wood or any plastic to speak of. If you won’t be using it, I’d like to take some.”

“Help yourself,” John said.

When Major and Stuart returned from the barn, Vicki handed each one a fresh glass of sweet tea.

“I’m ready.” Rosalie donned her backpack. “Let’s go.”

“Thanks for the tea.” Stuart gulped it down and rushed out with Rosalie.

“You ready, Aimee Louise?” Major asked as he finished his tea.

“Yes.”

On their way to the farm, Aimee Louise asked, “Are we ready to lose power?”

“We’re in a little better shape, but I’m worried we’ve forgotten something. When we get back to the farm, I’d like for you to see what you can find.”

“Rosalie too,” Aimee Louise said.

“Of course.”

Major passed Rosalie and Stuart at the state road and continued on to the farm. Aimee Louise leaned back in her seat.

“I’ve been thinking about how to contact the judge’s son,” Major said. “Could you ask the hams about any Amber alerts from Miami?”

“Yes. I’ll tell them to contact the northern Florida sheriffs.”

“That’s easy.” Major pulled up to the gate. “I’ll unlock it.”

After he opened the gate and climbed back in the driver’s seat, he said, “But they won’t, will they? They’ll use the ham radio.”

“Yes, but word will circulate beyond the ham community.”

Major chuckled as he closed the gate then drove to the house.

After supper, Aimee Louise, Rosalie, and Annie settled in at the ham radio, and Stuart wandered to the computer room to listen. Vanessa returned to the sofa, and Sara, Molly, and Sheriff went for a stroll to check the garden, chickens, and goats. Josh and Brett raced to the goat pen and climbed onto the fence to wait. Shadow and Penny stayed on the back porch.

Major and Mr. Young relaxed in their rockers as the sun dipped into the horizon in a blaze of fiery orange, and a light breeze from the west cooled the air.

“I look forward to the sunrise in the mornings, but there’s nothing more relaxing than the sunset,” Mr. Young said as he rocked. “You have any more thoughts?”

“I have a feeling that things are not going well for Charles McNeil. I just need to be ready when the opportunity pops up.”

“Seems like we might want to stage supplies for you, so you can take off at a moment’s notice. My trailer might be the best place.”

“Good idea.” Major narrowed his eyes. “Annie said your face was flushed earlier. You running a fever?”

“No, I’m fine. The kitchen got too hot for me, and I didn’t have the good sense to take a break. Molly sent me outside to cool down. She said if I don’t take breaks and drink water, she’ll fire me.” Mr. Young shook his head. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had a woman fussing over me. I’d forgotten how cranky a woman is when she’s worried.”

“Kind of nice, isn’t it?” Major smiled when Mr. Young snorted.

Stuart, Aimee Louise, and Annie came out of the house.
