CHAPTER ELEVEN

Everyone of my group was at breakfast the next morning except Joseph. He would be along soon, no doubt. So far, none of this group was a stay-in-bed-until-the-last-minute tourist. We were leaving Edinburgh today for a three-day tour of western Scotland which included Loch Lomond, the Highlands and the Isle of Iona. Joseph would not be late for that. We would be away two nights and had to vacate our rooms at The Royal Stuart. I’d rebooked them for our return.

I wish I could give my group a more encompassing view of Scotland. There were fascinating landscapes and cities we didn’t have time to see: Aberdeen, Inverness, Portree, the Orkneys, and the many villages and wild country in between. We could spend months looking at castles, tasting whiskey and wandering in the hills. It wasn’t possible to see it all. This tour was advertised as an Edinburgh experience with some small trips—just a taste of Scotland. I’d have to organize a tour north to Orkney, Skara Brae and the Ness of Brogar as well as the many other archeological sites there. Several mysteries are set in the Orkneys, so tourists could relate to those authors. I could think of at least three other tours I’d like to add.

“I love Iona,” Isla said as she served our eggs on hot plates. “My mom’s potty about it. All that mysticism, sanctity and peace, or so she says.” Her mother was producing our appetizing breakfasts, but I had yet to catch a glimpse of her.

“Have you been there? What do you think?” Isobel asked her. Years of teaching young students at university probably made Isobel genuinely interested in Isla’s opinions.

“Right-oh, It’s a treat.” She smiled at Isobel as she placed the plate in front of her.

Iona was a “treat’ with its abbey, old graveyard and the sense of peace hung in the air. It almost made you believe in magic.

“How’s your assignment going?” Georgie asked her.

A sudden stricken look passed over Isla’s eyes. Didn’t Georgie know about the death of Isla’s friend Ellie? I was sure she was with the group when I told them about it. Perhaps she hadn’t been listening.

“We’re working on it. Everyone adds a little. I like working with the other two.”

Georgie didn’t comment further and addressed herself to her breakfast.

Bert Anderson had greeted me with a cheerful good morning when I’d arrived and was applying serious attention to his breakfast. He had a newspaper with him and was reading what looked like the financial pages. Most business people checked their information online. Bert was getting it the old-fashioned way.

Suzy arrived with Christopher, her four feet planted solidly, and stood for a moment swaying a little. It’s too bad there wasn’t a medication that didn’t cause so much lethargy. She had a sweet spirit, but wandered in a fog most of the time. I could look online for a better medication, but no dog owner was going to take veterinarian advice from a tour guide. Gulliver slipped out from under my table, sidled up to Suzy and licked her ear.
