Chapter 17

Rescue Attempt

Pulling up to the warehouse, Victoria slid her car behind some trees a good distance away. Yet from the road the old thing was still visible. Trevor yearned to speak up but her scrunched look zipped his lips. The car was hot enough without the rasping air conditioner.

The moment they exited the car the heat struck him full forced and he wobbled. Crystal caught him with a concerned glare. Her scent sent his heart pounding, despite an overtone of perspiration. Hiding behind the car, they huddled together. Victoria’s blueberry smell mingled with the earthy aroma of the woods. The tweets and chirps should hide their whispers, especially if they kept their voices lowered than the rustles of the leaves.

Victoria spoke first. Her arm pressed down on her master’s back. “We need to scout out the place.”

“She’s right,” said Crystal, resting her arm on his shoulder, “If we charge in, they’ll just surround us and wipe us out.”

“Okay.” Yet dread churned his stomach and bile soured his throat. “Are you sure they didn’t see us pass by?”

Crystal huffed. “I bet they didn’t suspect a thing. See how many cars are passing by?”

The numerous zooms and breezes of the cars from the road supported her case. Still, what if they saw them slow down? He shut his eyes and forced the thought of his head. Crystal was the expert in this sort of thing. During the ride here, she had explained she worked as a monster PI who the vampires hired to investigate the Bloodwater Coven. The cheapskates had kept a close eye on her and insisted that she work hard for them even though they paid below her lowest fee.

“Let me try something.” Victoria let go and stood up straight without permission. Not that she needed it in the first place.

She held out her forefinger and whispered a stream of strange words. Her eyes closed a touch then lift toward the trees. A finch fluttered down and perched on her finger. With a burgeoning smile she whispered to the bird. It tweeted and took off. More flaps came from the branches above.

Trevor stared at her. “What in the world did you do?”

“Found myself some spies.” She giggled like some little girl. Yeah, a six foot reptile girl of bubbly blueberries. “I never got the chance to try it before.”

“You don’t even know if it’ll work?” His heart iced over. What if the vampires noticed the birds acting strange? They would definitely figure it out. They had to be on the look out for the Bloodwater Coven so Blueberry Girl’s antics would get them all caught.

“Of course it will work. I’ve studied it a lot. I practice some on the birds at Broom and Star too.” She gave him a nasty glare. “I’m not just arm candy.”

Against that airy voice he just had to respond. “You’re the one who insisted on it.”

Her nose wrinkled as if he smelled of manure. “I wish I had a choice.”

“Hey!” Crystal jumped between them. “Now’s not the time to fight.
