16.

Heading into danger.

The sky lightened with blushing streaks of pink and orange; clouds lit from behind in a fiery glow. The sunrise intensified as it cast the night off. It made the dark surrounds of the Grinning Corpse Inn a little less sinister. Akaros Griwar twisted her head so that it was upside down. Her long hair braid touched the ground and her single eye blinked as she regarded Bowen. The Cállavëar stood oddly. His right foot was upon the crossbeam of a hitching rail, about at his chest height, his toes faced forward. He’d planted his left foot on the ground. What made it odd was that he’d bent at the hips, leaned forward and touched his forehead to his left shin.

“What’s that called again?” she asked.

“A single leg forward bend,” he replied.

“And why do you do that to yourself?” she wondered aloud.

“I’ve explained this to you before,” he said. “A castle will only stay strong if it has good foundations. Like a castle, I try to keep myself strong.”

“You’re like a castle,” she said.

“Yes,” he said. “Good foundation.” He smiled. “A good foundation in strength and flexibility. The key to flexibility is stretching. You stretch your muscles; you awaken and energise them. When you do this, you fill them with a new sense of fluidity, power and effortlessness.”

“You tied this into the current and flow stuff you told me about yesterday,” she said. Bowen nodded.

“Yes. While we stayed at the farm,” he replied. “Like the current of a river,” he replied. “To help you flow between attack and defence, your body must be in the best condition possible. Otherwise, the flow is not effortless.” He disengaged the pose and stood upright on both feet.

Akaros sighed. He did this every morning. It took about half an hour, and he did most of it before dawn, before she woke. But she was of the opinion they’d be a little further advanced on their quest if he would just wake up each day and set off, like she would have.

She’d come with Bowen to show him a faster route to his goal, along many goat trails known only to the cyclops. The course had taken them a little further north than the direct route, but overall it would save them at least a day of travel time. Last night they’d slept in the barn of a farm, a pleasant walk of about a day north and east of the Grinning Corpse. The family, a man named Ambrose, his wife Winifred and their multitude of children, were wonderful hosts and had told them a story of a man with wizardly powers who’d stayed with them not too long ago. Bowen had confided in Akaros the man they spoke of was Duncan Hawkwind, the outsider known to the priests who’d engaged him to find the Corazón. He’d also told her all he knew from the priests of Dian; and of the other group from Torun, who pursued the wraithknight.

Across from them, she glanced
