CHAPTER 12

Hivini Kingdom

Fifty days after arrival

My body burned hot. It felt like I’d been thrown into the depths of hell, the flames licking at my flesh, devouring me whole. I couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe.

Did I die?

I thought as I laid staring into the never-ending darkness.

Then as if life was breathed back into me, I startled awake with a loud gasp, my lungs greedily sucking in the calm air. My body felt heavy and everything ached.

I stared up at an unfamiliar ceiling, the ornate decorations seeming gaudy and unnecessary. I was in a room; a very lavish and expensive looking room. For the first time in a long time, I was in a real building, lying in a real bed, complete with fluffy pillows and a comfortable mattress.

I tried lifting my arms, but they felt especially heavy. I looked down, hoping they were still intact and found Aquina and Cera asleep, each clasping desperately to one of my hands. I squeezed their hands lightly, gently rousing them from sleep.

Aquina looked at me first, tears already starting to form in her eyes.

“Thank Zinbi!” She breathed out the words before kissing the back of my hand.

Cera was up now too and staring as if she witnessed a ghost who’d come back from the grave.

”Don’t scare us like that!” She screamed as she lightly hit my chest with her fist.

“Ouch! Is that any way to treat a patient?” I teased her, not having felt much from her soft hand.

Cera stared for a minute before apologizing and burying her face into my side. I noticed Aquina smile gently as she watched Cera’s reaction.

“I’m sorry if I scared you,” I said, breaking the silence.

“Scared, no way. You were only asleep for three days,” Aquina responded, the comment thick with sarcasm.

“Three days?” I questioned in disbelief, shocked by the new information.

“The healers weren’t sure you would ever wake up,” The softness of Cera’s voice revealed her worries.

“What happened to the orc?” I tried to switch the direction of the conversation.

“It was actually a high-orc, and it has been dealt with. The king was able to kill it using his lightning mana gift and the Hivini will be eating well for the next month or so I’m sure.”

So that was lightning magic. I wondered where the bolt came from so suddenly when it had been such a clear day.

I couldn’t help but admit I was impressed by what I had seen. The lightning looked powerful, intimidating and two bolts were enough to take out the massive creature that brushed off my attacks as mere inconveniences.

While I was in awe of the power, I realized it also made me feel weak. My attempt to stop the high-orc from entering the city had been...pitiful. The defeat brought me right back to my first days on Jormia and my fight with Mara. It made me realize just how far I still had to go if I wanted to stand a chance at defeating the Rexco.

“...although we can’t be sure how it was able to evolve much less how it ended up on Hivini territory.
