Chapter Six

Portal Realm: Aquina

One hundred and seven days after Nolan’s arrival

“Aquina? Is that you? Please tell me I’m not hearing things,”

Nolan’s voice filtered through the communication gem clear as day.

I sighed in relief, so thankful to have the chance to talk with him.

“It’s me, I’m okay,” I had so much to tell him, but I knew that needed to be said first.

Cera quickly took over asking where I had ended up. I tried to sum up the information, unsure of how long the communication gem would hold out, especially with the connection being across different worlds, but even I found my report to be unbelievable.

I remembered to include the fact that others were in the world with me, and that things were only getting weirder the longer I stayed. Silence met my excitement to share the news of the other’s safety, Cera jumping to the state of those imprisoned in the world. I didn’t dwell on their reaction, choosing to reveal as much information as I could before the device gave out.

“Are you any closer to finding a way out?”

I wished I had better news—some way to reassure them that I would be with them again in no time, but I had nothing. After revealing the state of the world and the possibility of a sacrificial ceremony happening periodically in the strange town, I knew they needed to hear about the information I had found regarding the general and his mana gifts.

As I planned out exactly how to break the news, static filtered through the gem.

“Are you okay?” I shouted at the trinket in my hand, receiving no immediate response.

“What’s happening over there? Please—answer me.” I felt desperate and helpless, unable to even see what they were facing on the other side.

Finally, Nolan’s voice crackled through, “The Rexco are here.”

“Already?! Wait! Please, you must listen to me...” I shouted, my words seeming to go unnoticed.

I heard the muffled tone of the general's voice, taunting Nolan, trying to elicit a reaction. More static.

I tried pleading once again, “I know he is vile, but you can’t kill him.

Not yet.”

No response.

“I’m sorry, Aquina, but something has come up. Don’t worry—we are going to get you back soon.”

“Please... don’t go! I need you to listen! Nolan!” My voice cracked as I desperately tried to get his attention, his words fading as he moved further from the communication device.

I slammed my hand on the bookcase, feeling overwhelmed. Obsidian nuzzled at my leg, hoping to calm my emotions. Looking into his deep grey eyes, I exhaled, trying not to panic. Did I think that Nolan could kill the general? Yes, without a doubt.

I just wasn’t sure what that would mean for the rest of us trapped in the rat’s maze.

“Aquina, I’m here. Please tell me what you found,” Cera’s hushed voice filled the silent room.

“Thank Zinbi. I’ll try to make it quick, Cera,” I responded, realizing she was in the middle of a battle, one I couldn’t even guess the scope of.
