Chapter eleven

“Wait... We’re really here to fight a gang of kids? That seems a bit...” She looked at the thin man, who had a bit of tan skin showing on his face, his outfit once having been white, showing as a dingy gray color in the light of the streetlamps overhead. It was a bit orange, but she knew that really would be the combination of shadows and how dim the glow was. What the man, who had been introduced as Linear, not a real name at all, had suggested was that they needed to get some property back from a group of children.

Not a hardened gang either. Kids. Like, people that were actually shorter than she was.

Waiting for an answer, she played at her face, since she had a mask on, over her eyes. A thing made of black and deep red lace, which, she understood, hadn’t been in the glove compartment just in case a friend needed to hide an identity. No, Veronica was a kinky little thing, it was clear. Worse, it didn’t go with the rest of her outfit at all, which was, if not casual clothing, chosen for being loose and able to hide her weapons.

The other two actually seemed ready for what they were facing. She seemed ready to go to the swinger’s club and take on all comers. Which, in the moment, sounded almost like it could be fun. Not that she was going to the gang bang that night. She owned her sexuality, but Hannah didn’t really want to own ten sexually transmitted diseases, so she always tried to hold that in mind when she went out to score.

So far it had worked.

The guy, Linear the superhero, looked away then.

“I’m kind of hoping that having three of us will scare them into giving the book over. They didn’t steal it, but you get me, finders keepers. Except they found a notebook that belongs to the Tinner, and he was planning to send in a golem to get it back, which would probably leave the kids dead, along with anyone too near them. He got in touch with me first, thankfully. I don’t normally run errands for the bad guys, but... I think he doesn’t really want to murder children. Just get his book back.”

Hannah got the basic idea but shook her head at the same time.

“I don’t know that name. A local... Drug kingpin?”

Instead of acting like she was too stupid to keep breathing on her own, Linear shook his head, locking eyes with her through his own mask.

“Nothing that boring. He works in magic and metal, like a blacksmith? What he makes... Basically robots, except that they don’t work on tech and can do a lot more. Generally, he has his creations do things for him, but they tend to be violent. I’d shut him down, but the truth is that he’s way out of my league that way. I don’t have any powers...” He seemed embarrassed by that fact, as if being normal were a personal failing.
