Nine

Chapter 9

“Oh God,” I groaned into my pillow and glared at the phone next to my bed. Only a few people had this number. The secured line was for emergencies only, but Carmela used it whenever the hell she wanted to. Having a little sister was hell on gangsters, too.

“This better be fucking urgent,” I said. The morning light filtered through the curtains but was still way too fucking bright as I squinted. I wasted a moment, reliving the previous night—our argument, her nightmare, our early morning confession session, the feel of her in my arms. Shit felt like a hangover.

“Good morning to you too, brother dear.” Carmela laughed. The sound was so unnatural and grating that I was surprised it didn’t jack up our connection. “Late night?”

I sat up slowly, my muscles aching as if I’d run a marathon. Stress was a bitch. The house was quiet. The silence broken only by birds chirping outside the window. I rubbed a hand over my face, my fingers rasping against my morning stubble. “I don’t have time for this shit. Spit it out or call later.”

“Fine,” she huffed. “I did some poking around and have some good news.” She paused, and I waited for her implied drumroll to end. When she still didn’t say a word, I interrupted her theatrical pause. Because it was too early for a visit with the drama queen.

“Carmela,” I warned.

“Okay, okay—you don’t have to kill wifey after all.”

That was a double-shot expresso. My nervous system jumped into high gear, and I wanted to laugh. Race to her room, sweep her into my arms, and dance in circles. I could barely push the words past the smile holstered to my face. “Wait, what? Carlo said it was airtight.”

“Carlo was right and wrong. I mean, you still have to kill her, but you don’t have to wait six months. You can off your bride tonight if you want. Take her for a midnight swim and Natalie Wood her. I can come up there and paddle the boat if you need a wingwoman.”

“I don’t need one, thank you.”

“What’s wrong? You don’t sound excited.”

“Nothing. I just. I didn’t ask you to do this. If I have to wait six months, then I wait six months. We’re not in a hurry. Hell, we’ve already made what we lost and more. So—”

“Oh, my ever-loving God. You were the one who was on an all-out rampage to find the thief.”

“And we found him and ended him so… it’s—” I broke off because what could I say? How could I explain that Regina had lost enough?

“It’s what?” I winced at her tone.

“Nothing, I’m just saying we took care of the thief—”

“What the fuck, Damiano? Is her pussy that fucking good?” I clenched my fist and reminded myself that she was my sister. “I need to know—does it shoot sparkles and fireworks when it comes? Please explain the magic of this pussy.”

“Actually, it does.” I snarled. “So don’t question my motherfucking decisions again. You don’t have to love her, but you will fucking respect her.
