Chapter 19

Grayson

I throw myself into work after we return from our sad excuse of a honeymoon, and spend all of my free time with Max. Lillian is still traipsing around the house in those little nighties, and I almost regret telling her to buy them.

I manage by taking very cold showers every night and trying not to look at her, no matter what she’s wearing. I’ve realized by this point that it isn’t what she’s wearing, or what makeup she has on, it’s just that she’s gorgeous, and particularly gorgeous to me. It’s like no matter what she’s done, I still want her, so I have to keep my mind off it.

Luckily for me, we’ve just landed a huge deal with a law firm and we’re doing all their marketing. I’ve been paired up with a bright young marketing executive by the name of Charlotte Richards, and she’s brilliant. I have to admit that I wouldn’t be able to do my job as well if it weren’t for her, and we’re working together quite closely. She’s a few years older than me, and she’s been in the business just as long, so I feel comfortable with her.

We go to dinner after a long night at work on Thursday, and when I get home, Lillian’s pouty, clearly in a mood. She and Max are sitting at the dinner table, and I realize that she’s made pot roast, a meal that I’ve repeatedly told her is my favorite.

It’s congealing on the table, and I swallow hard, wondering if she’s angry with me. I shouldn’t care, given what she’s done to me, but I don’t like the look of disappointment on her face.

“Mommy got a job!” Max crows the instant that I walk into the kitchen, and I look over at Lillian. She blushes slightly, looking away.

“Just wanted us to have a nice family dinner,” she says quietly, her voice sounding hurt.

“You should have told me,” I start, coming closer to her, and she takes in a deep breath and then gives me a shrewd look.

“I wanted it to be a surprise.” She narrows her eyes. “You already had dinner, I assume?”

I nod and ruffle Max’s hair. “Time to get a bath, kiddo. Go pick out your pajamas.”

Max obediently heads off to his room, and I look at Lillian but she’s still looking at the floor.

“I’m sorry I missed dinner,” I say earnestly. “I really didn’t know you were planning it. If you had texted me—”

“Weren’t you busy?” Lillian accuses, shooting her gaze to mine.

I stared at her. “I was at dinner with a colleague, it was business related.”

“Hmm, was it? You sure smell a lot like perfume for it to have been a business dinner,” she snaps, and it slowly dawns on me.

“You’re jealous,” I accuse, a smile spreading across my face. Lillian had never really been the possessive type, even when we were together, and she’d never shown a sign of it after we’d been married. I can’t deny that it makes me happy, especially since the thought of her with someone else drives me nuts.
