CHAPTER 16

Jared and I pulled into the driveway at home and frowned. I had called Willie and asked if he could meet me at the farmhouse because I had something to talk to him and Cooper about. I didn't think he would beat me there, but he had, and I knew that meant Cooper would be worried, wondering why I had sent for Willie.

I opened the front door to Bella and Topknot demanding attention. I always loved how it didn't matter how long I was gone. It could be two minutes or two days, and they would both act like they hadn't seen me forever. After giving them some attention, of course, which was not enough in their opinion, we walked into the kitchen, with them following behind. Cooper and Willie were both sitting at the table, looking grim.

“Why are we always meeting in the kitchen? This is a pretty big house. We could meet in the living room.” Personally, I loved the kitchen, but I was just trying to bring some levity to the situation.

“Take a seat. What is it you have to tell me that you want Willie here as backup?” Cooper said.

I took a seat as he asked, a little annoyed that he thought I needed Willie as backup, mainly because the majority of the time he and Willie were in agreement against me.

“I didn't ask Willie here so I'd have someone on my side. In fact, once I fill you guys in, I'm sure you will both be on the same side, which will probably not be mine. I just wanted Willie here in a professional capacity just as much as a friend.”

“Then spill it,” Willie said.

“Geez, you guys need to relax. It isn't that big of a deal,” I said and proceeded to tell them what Tobey told me.

“How can you say this isn't a big deal?” Cooper said after I finished.

“Because, you know, people are often all talk.” I shrugged.

“I agree with Cooper. This is definitely a big deal,” Willie said.

I knew that was going to happen, them agreeing, and I was totally fine. I understood where they were coming from.

“And I'm not thrilled that Tobey didn't come to me with this,” Cooper said sternly. The last thing I wanted to do was get Tobey in trouble.

“I think when the call came in, you weren’t in the office, and he happened to see my car at Mi Casa. Don't be mad at Tobey.”

“So I guess the question we need to ask is, who have you been bothering that would be so angry they would try and threaten you by calling the mayor's office,” Willie said.

“I don't know. I mean, I talked to Patricia Connors, a friend of Sylvia's. I talked to Anthony and his staff too, two of whom are female, and Tobey said it was definitely a female voice. But I only talked to them once. And Patricia twice, but the second time not until after that call had been placed.
