Chapter 17

Pearl

The weeks until Ray was due flew by, and for Pearl they were the happiest of her life: she had her dream job, a beautiful apartment to live in, and she was hopelessly in love with the gorgeous Marcus Holding who seemed to feel the same about her. He hadn’t declared his love in so many words as yet, but she didn’t think she could feel more loved if he shouted it from the rooftops.

Even though he had his own key, they were not yet officially living together, and much of his time – way too much according to Pearl – was consumed with work and out-of-town business trips, but whenever he could get away he was with her. He took her to different parks to run and play on the playgrounds. They went rowing on the river, swimming, roller-skating, to the movies and anywhere else they could think to have fun. Whenever he could get away for the weekend, he drove her home to spend it with her parents, and Pearl was amazed anew each time at how easily he fit in and how comfortable everyone was together. He’d become good friends with her father, and together they spent hours wandering about the farm, discussing the inefficiencies of old-style farming in the light of modern problems such as hotter temperatures, decreasing water supplies and depleted soils. In the evening, though, he and Pearl walked in the moonlight, listening to the music of nature and kissing under a billion stars.

In the city, he loved to take her shopping and buy her presents, but she was uncomfortable about him spending too much money on her. He’d offered to buy her jewellery from Mon Addi but she’d begged him not to and he’d reluctantly agreed. “For the time being”, he’d said, tapping the side of his nose mysteriously.

But knowing how much she loved “Shaun the Sheep”, he’d surprised her with Shaun, Shirley and Timmy stuffies, a T-shirt, hoodie, and cup, all with pictures, and even a “Shaun the Sheep” backpack. He loved to buy her clothes: miniskirts and short, girly dresses, and shoes with spots, sparkles, and pictures. She had a new onesie in her wardrobe, too, but the bunny one remained the only one with feet and a flap.

She hadn’t worn it often. The second time was after she had stayed up late one evening watching a movie and had overslept the next morning. The most disappointing part, Marcus had told her, making her want to cry with shame was that she’d told him she was already in bed when he’d texted her to say ‘goodnight’ and that had been a lie. He’d also scolded her for being irresponsible, resulting in her being late for work. Marcie couldn’t punish her for that, so he’d included it in her spanking for lying to him and being disobedient.

She’d stood next to him as he scolded her and tears of misery had rolled down her face. She hated hearing him say that she had disappointed him.
