Adrik’s neighborhood was awfully quiet. Too quiet for my liking. Of course, it was late and a residential area in the historic district. If the Romans had followed me, they didn’t make it obvious.

I knocked a little louder than necessary just in case Borge was fast asleep in his coffin, or wherever a little vampire troll like him slumbered. After a full minute of waiting and hearing nothing on the other side of the door, I rang the obnoxious bell.

The door opened slightly shortly after that, and Borge’s eye appeared through the crack. “Master isn’t home.”

“I know.” I pushed the door open to let myself in because I had no time for an unpleasant discourse with the vampire. We had a war brewing, so patience was not my virtue at the moment. I just needed to get my hands on that book and get back to the cottage.

Borge hissed at me as I pushed my way past him and continued down the hallway.

“Where’s the library?”

“You have no right to be here! Get out, or I’ll—”

I turned around to show him my glowing green eyes, reminding him of whom he was dealing with. “You’ll what? Adrik sent me, by the way.” As I continued down the hallway, I suggested he whip out his phone and call his daddy to confirm it if it made him feel better.

While he stopped to do that, I found what I was looking for. The last room on the left had bookcases from floor to ceiling, and there wasn’t an empty spot on the shelves. How did he move into the place only a week ago and already have the library filled with books? He and his parasite must have worked night and day unpacking them.

Borge walked in behind me as I was scanning the books. He set his phone on the table and glanced at my tattered dress before heading across the room. “You’ll trip over that mountain of fabric before you’ve made it halfway up. Then I’ll have to clean up the mess you’ll make when you fall and break your neck.” After rolling the ladder to a shelf at the end of the wall, he climbed it to the top. He found the book I was looking for and tossed it down to me.

“Thanks,” I said, catching it before it hit my head.

He climbed back down and straightened his vest as he stared at me with bloodshot eyes. I was about to ask what he was looking at, but then I felt his mental fingers. He was trying to get inside my head again like the last time I was here.

“Get the fuck out of my head!”

He nearly tripped over the ladder when I barked at him. “Well, you don’t have to be rude.”

“Me? I’m rude? You’re trying to mind fuck me, and I’m the one being rude?” I shook my head and walked over to the long table in the middle of the room. It reminded me of the ones in the library of my alma mater, Columbia University.
