The next morning, I went to my lab and made myself remain there even when I heard footsteps overhead and laughter in the kitchen. Even when the heady scent of cinnamon and sugar filled my senses and made my belly snarl.
Okay, I couldnât resist the cinnamon and sugar smellâso I told myself as I took the stairs three at a time and exited into the hallway outside the kitchen. I paused before striding through the opening and stopped, peering around the room.
My two favorite females sat at the island eating muffins, hence the wonderful smell.
Mate, my dragon growled.
My daughter is also one of my favorites.
He huffed. Mate. Claim. Claim again.
There wasnât anything I wanted to do more than that.
It was unusual for him to rise to the surface other than when I released him to fly. But these were unusual circumstances. Weâd found our fated one, and that changed everything.
What was I going to do about it?
âJoin us, Kuunik,â Zara said, her voice bubbling over with laughter. âNo need to lurk in the open doorway.â
âI donât lurk,â I said, striding over to them.
My dragon snorted.
âGo away,â I said.
Zaraâs eyebrows lifted. âExcuse me?â
âI was talking toââ
Because Livy watched us, a smile twitching across her lips, I cut myself off to keep from mentioning what I shouldnât.
âDo you have to be cranky with Zara all the time?â Livy asked.
âIâm not cranky either,â I said.
Zara grinned and nudged an empty plate, the butter dish, and a tin still half full of muffins my way. Damn, they looked amazing.
I took one from the tin and peeled off the paper sheâd used to line the bottom, split it, then slathered each half with butter. It wasnât until Iâd taken a bite and was groaning that I realized they were both laughing.
âReally, thereâs no need to hide in the dungeon when weâre cooking,â Zara said, taking another muffin herself and preparing it. âI love to cook. Me and Livy here love to eat. Join us whenever youâd like.â
I wanted to join her in her bedroom.
Yes, my dragon sighed.
Youâre going to have to go away if I ever get that far, I told him. Iâm not having sex when youâre around.
Always around.
I didnât want to think about that. I hadnât cared when I was with Livyâs mom that one night, but it mattered with Zara. Youâll have to go away.
Will find place, he said with a sigh.
Heâd still be inside me, but as long as I didnât feel him watching, I could handle it.
I was a fool for thinking Iâd ever get that far with Zara. I didnât deserve a fated mate, not someone as special as her. Not after what Iâd done to my brother.
Yet I craved her endlessly.
I poured a cup of coffee and sat at the island beside Livy, opposite Zara, where I could watch her.
See her, that is.
Okay, watch her.
âWhatâs on the agenda for today?â I asked.
âWeâre painting rocks and doing chalk art on the driveway,â Livy said around a bite of muffin.
âSounds fun.
