The next morning, I went to my lab and made myself remain there even when I heard footsteps overhead and laughter in the kitchen. Even when the heady scent of cinnamon and sugar filled my senses and made my belly snarl.

Okay, I couldn’t resist the cinnamon and sugar smell—so I told myself as I took the stairs three at a time and exited into the hallway outside the kitchen. I paused before striding through the opening and stopped, peering around the room.

My two favorite females sat at the island eating muffins, hence the wonderful smell.

Mate, my dragon growled.

My daughter is also one of my favorites.

He huffed. Mate. Claim. Claim again.

There wasn’t anything I wanted to do more than that.

It was unusual for him to rise to the surface other than when I released him to fly. But these were unusual circumstances. We’d found our fated one, and that changed everything.

What was I going to do about it?

“Join us, Kuunik,” Zara said, her voice bubbling over with laughter. “No need to lurk in the open doorway.”

“I don’t lurk,” I said, striding over to them.

My dragon snorted.

“Go away,” I said.

Zara’s eyebrows lifted. “Excuse me?”

“I was talking to—”

Because Livy watched us, a smile twitching across her lips, I cut myself off to keep from mentioning what I shouldn’t.

“Do you have to be cranky with Zara all the time?” Livy asked.

“I’m not cranky either,” I said.

Zara grinned and nudged an empty plate, the butter dish, and a tin still half full of muffins my way. Damn, they looked amazing.

I took one from the tin and peeled off the paper she’d used to line the bottom, split it, then slathered each half with butter. It wasn’t until I’d taken a bite and was groaning that I realized they were both laughing.

“Really, there’s no need to hide in the dungeon when we’re cooking,” Zara said, taking another muffin herself and preparing it. “I love to cook. Me and Livy here love to eat. Join us whenever you’d like.”

I wanted to join her in her bedroom.

Yes, my dragon sighed.

You’re going to have to go away if I ever get that far, I told him. I’m not having sex when you’re around.

Always around.

I didn’t want to think about that. I hadn’t cared when I was with Livy’s mom that one night, but it mattered with Zara. You’ll have to go away.

Will find place, he said with a sigh.

He’d still be inside me, but as long as I didn’t feel him watching, I could handle it.

I was a fool for thinking I’d ever get that far with Zara. I didn’t deserve a fated mate, not someone as special as her. Not after what I’d done to my brother.

Yet I craved her endlessly.

I poured a cup of coffee and sat at the island beside Livy, opposite Zara, where I could watch her.

See her, that is.

Okay, watch her.

“What’s on the agenda for today?” I asked.

“We’re painting rocks and doing chalk art on the driveway,” Livy said around a bite of muffin.

“Sounds fun.
