Ministry of Defense, Ichigaya
âAnd how may I help you today?â The voice on the other end of the line was unusually jovial.
âSaiga, itâs Terasawa. Been a while. Iâm calling about yesterdayâs orb auction.â
âYou mean about the item box orb?â
âIt wasnât included in the list of auction orbs.â
âDonât tell me you actually had plans to bid on it?â
Terasawa bit his tongue. Saiga knew very well the Ministry wouldnât allow him the funds to bid on it.
âThereâs just one thing I want you to tell me,â Terasawa said.
âWhat is it?â
âThe capacityâhow much does the skill let you hold?â
Even if Type 10 tanks or Type 16 maneuver combat vehicles were out of the question, the ability to bring even a protected mobility vehicle into dungeons would greatly improve the safety of dungeon-bound troops. If they were able to store Apaches, the range of areas they could easily explore would incrase several fold.
âAh yes.â There was a pause from the other end of the line. âTruth be told, weâre not sure yet.â
âNot sure?â Terasawa didnât follow. Hadnât Saiga beaten other bidders to the punch and arranged an advanced purchase? If he had, surely someone at the JDA had used the orb by now. âDo you mean you havenât retrieved the orb yet?â
âThere is that, but... Terasawa, let me pose you a question. Say the JSDF got the orb. Who would you have use it?â
âI wouldââ
Terasawa paused. He wasnât sure how much the JDA had paid for the orb, but he was sure it was no small sum. In order to use the orb, they would have to bind that exorbitant purchase to a single individual. And it was far easier to bind orbs to individuals than to bind individuals to their jobs.
In modern Japan, where the ability to change work was an inalienable right, who exactly would they entrust with such a valuable item? It was a difficult question.
Terasawa was at a loss.
âWell, there you have it,â Saiga responded. âWe canât confirm the skillâs abilities if we canât identify a suitable user.â
âBut, the orb countââ
âHas been taken care of with a little ingenuity.â
âIngenuity?â Terasawa was left scratching his head at Saigaâs implication. âWell, if you learn anything...â
âYouâll be the first person I call. However, Iâd like to ask one favor.â
âA favor?â
âIf anything happens, Iâd like to ask for your cooperation.â
âIf what happens?â
âAnything.â
When it came to the user of this orb, it certainly seemed like any number of problems could arise. However, if all went well, the JSDF may be able to borrow the orb-userâs skills in return. If Terasawa couldnât decide who in his own organization he would have use the orb, outsourcing the decision while still reaping the benefits seemed like an attractive choice.
âUnderstood. Seems like there are a number of ways we could be mutually supportive of one anotherâs efforts moving forward.â Terasawa ended the call. âAnything...â he repeated, setting the phone back on its base.
