CHAPTER TWENTY
None of us wake up for a whole twenty-four hours, thanks to the aftereffects of whatever the hell Emma does to boost us. Itâs probably good weâre out of it, because while we sleep, Westhaven argues. When we end up back in the Council chambers, fed and rested, most of the decisions have been made. Iâm not sure where the other half of the Cute Mutants are. Maybe theyâre off on their own mission. For now, itâs only us, standing in front of our wonderful team leader, fucking Amethyst.
âJumper confirms your story.â His voice has only the slightest trace of sarcasm. âIt seems almost impossibly fortuitous.â
Dani smirks. âMaybe one of us has luck powers and doesnât know it.â
âPerhaps.â Amethystâs lips purse. âItâs far more likely youâre all lying. In your favour, the media have dropped the story rather quickly. Daintree has denied any involvement, and called the video an example of how sophisticated fake news is. An entirely different company with no ties to Daintree reported an explosive accident at a manufacturing plant at that location.â
âGlad it worked out, boss.â I give him a saluteânot that I really know howâand Amethyst shoots me a look much sharper than his usual bland expression. It takes me by surprise, and I stare back at him for a moment.
âI have nothing further to say, Chatterbox. You are dismissed.â He gets to his feet and stalks out of the room. I feel like Iâve been given a clue to something, but I donât know what, so we all head out together.
âDid you see that look?â I ask.
âHe thinks youâre a smartass.â Alyse grins at me. âI have no idea where he came up with that.â
âPeople always think that.â I mock-frown. âI must give off a vibe or something?â
âOr something.â Alyse links her arm through mine. âI still remember you as this shy, angry person and now...â
âYes?â
âYouâre a confident, angry person.â She bursts out laughing. âItâs a good look on you.â
It takes me by surprise, to hear me described like that. Not angry, because thereâs so much shit to be furious about, but confident? It doesnât seem right. I do keep shoving myself places and doing things without thinking. That canât be what confidence is, surely.
âAlyse,â I begin, ready to enter into a terrible philosophical discussion of confidence, but weâve arrived in a large gathering chamber where weâre greeted by a wave of cheers and applause.
âWhat the fuck?â I murmur.
The room is full of people. I donât recognise anyone until a buff Samoan dude with a moustache steps forward and shakes my hand vigorously.
âItâs you, Chatterbox! You woke me up with a sword, shouting about a bomb.â
âOh shit. Youâre all the people from the camp.â
He laughs uproariously. âOf course! We owe youââ
Heâs interrupted by a surprising figure. Itâs Metron, even more fine-boned and disturbingly frail.
âAt last.â His voice is low and intense. âGoddess, I must speak with you.â
âHold up.â Alyse interposes herself between them. âLast time, you got yourself knocked out for days.â
âThat is unimportant.
