Chapter fourteen

Valerius

S ince my title ceremony, people seemed to have turned into idiots. Even though I had been doing the job behind the scenes for years, it was like receiving the title drove people to forget how to do their jobs and fuck up. I received word from New York that previously quiet opponents suddenly found their voice and were trying to undermine projects, which wasn’t all too surprising, and partners were going back on their word. It was a little trickier to navigate from across the world but doable. I trusted men back home who would do what they needed to.

It was nice being in Italy, even though it wasn’t a full vacation. Especially having Adaliya settling in, and I could tell she was becoming more comfortable. Exploring her body was my new favorite pastime and I could hardly focus on the work at hand whenever I knew she was nearby.

No, that’s not true. She was always on my mind, and it was a constant distraction.

There was a slight nagging in the back of my mind telling me this was the honeymoon phase. The glamor of being in a different country with no obligations, at least on her end, was putting her at ease. I caught the way she stared at me and the way her body responded, clenched and writhed under my attention. It was more than a simple arrangement between us. It was something real.

But I was on edge thinking about how it would be when we left Italy. Would she pull back? Did she still see us as a short-term stint?

No. I couldn’t let that happen. This went way beyond our initial arrangement. She was mine. Forever.

And I was hers.

“Val, did you hear me?” Salvatore asked, impatience creeping into his voice.

I mentally shook myself. We were waiting for Adaliya to finish getting ready so we could head to the wedding ceremony. “Something about a fight?” I recalled a keyword or two.

He crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes. “You look more menacing than normal.”

“Menacing? What a big word.” I said dryly.

“Fuck you.” He scowled. “I was saying I’m going to set up a fight for shortly after we get back to New York.”

I nodded. “Make sure the big players are invited, I want a crowd and I wouldn’t complain about the extra money. You going to enter?”

“Yes.” He was not only my enforcer, but he was the best fighter I knew. It was actually how we met, at an underground gig. He was in the ring, and I was watching. He was a little unhinged, but I knew with the right structure he could be a useful motherfucker with his formidable stature and scowling face. And I was right.

“Where's Nero?” I asked. It wasn’t abnormal for Nero to disappear every once in a while, but I hadn’t seen him in a day or so.

Salvatore’s big shoulders lifted. “I’m not his keeper.”

I leveled my glare on him. “What crawled up your ass?”

“Nothing, just hate wearing these damn suits.
