Most of that morning into the afternoon was spent talking with Ned and Linda about the book in my lap.

I had gotten so caught up and so overwhelmed by the thought that things such as vampires and fae mages really existed in the world, that I jumped when I heard the little bell on the door to the bookstore jingle.

When Chet and Orin walked in and saw the three of us on the couch with the book in my lap and a bottle of bourbon on the coffee table, it didn’t take them long to figure out that I knew.

Chet seemed miffed that the ruse was up and that he could no longer put on his pretend persona in order to seduce me without my knowledge. Orin, on the other hand, seemed relieved that it was all out in the open. They both came to sit down on the giant ottoman in front of us.

“Thank you,” I said as Orin sat down across from me. “Linda told me that you might have saved my life.”

Chet gave him a curious glance as he wondered what I was talking about. It was strange how the two of them didn’t seem to want to kill each other anymore. At least not at this very moment.

“No need to thank me,” he said.

At first, I might have taken his rebuke of my apology to be rude, but then what Linda had said echoed in my head and I realized that even though Orin might have started to care about me, he was still trying not to get attached. Chet, on the other hand, lunged into a fully-open admission of how much he wanted me; for both my power as a reader and also for more physical reasons.

“Just think of it, you and I together, we could read all the books together during the day and make love to each other all night. Hell, we could swap that around too.”

Orin was obviously not happy with Chet’s suggested outcome. He sat perched on the edge of the ottoman as far away from Chet as he could possibly get. I was pretty sure it was to keep from hitting him.

In the story, it mentioned that the two supernaturals couldn’t control and safeguard the magic over the Earth by the use of physical force. They had to earn it through knowledge only. That was probably why Orin hadn’t wasted his energy on beating the shit out of Chet yet. I actually did wonder who would win in a physical match though. Orin was definitely bigger and stronger, but Chet was also in good physical shape and whatever he lacked in bulk, he surely made up for in cunning and devious manipulation of his vampiric talents. Since Orin was a mage, and Linda said mages had magic like all of the Fae possessed, then I was betting he had a few tricks up his sleeve too.

“How about you keep your hands and other parts of your body to yourself,” Orin chastised him.
