Chapter Nine
“Do you think Pearl is going to be okay?” Piper asked with concern as we finally exited the diner. The morning chill in the air had not dissipated, and there was still fog hugging the ground in low-lying areas. The temperature was finally capitulating to the late season. The overcast sky made it easier for me to take a quick scan of the sidewalk and street without the deficit of deep shadows, but I didn’t notice anything or anyone out of the ordinary. “I mean, Jasper has to know Pearl is somewhere nearby just by her scent.”
Jasper.
A werewolf.
Who would have thought the elderly man who’d appeared barely able to summon the energy to get off his stool last night was a werewolf? He’d all but told us that the campsite was safe enough. According to him, these attacks happened every five years or so. Was it some sort of ritual? Did the pack need to bring so many new members into the fold to keep the pack viable? Had he been setting us up to be just another snack or the first kill for their new initiate?
“Pearl can handle her own,” I replied, fully convinced that the white sleek familiar could take on an entire pack of werewolves and come out without a smudge of dirt on her pristine fur. “Besides, she has the upper hand by remaining invisible even from a werewolf’s superior vision. We’ll use the time we have to go speak with Noah. Did you hear what that couple said about Brady or Benji not knowing of Noah’s plans? Something with his story isn’t sitting right with me.”
Noah’s life had been spared last night, and this was not the run of the mill murder mystery we usually ended up attempting to solve while investigating this type of case. We could leave right now and never look back.
It was clear that a pack of werewolves had made this town their home for quite some time, though not necessarily within the core residents. Knox had gone hunting himself and would most likely discover a den area where the pack had set up residence when in animal form.
The pack wouldn’t want to risk being discovered by one of their own going rogue, so what were we missing? I’d already jumped to the conclusion that Jasper had set us up last night, but that seemed a bit far-fetched if you dug into it.
We could easily go on our way, knowing that the pack would most likely solve their problem with their members amongst themselves. We weren’t the fixers of the supernatural world, yet I couldn’t bring myself to drive away in search of a cure for my hex and leave these innocent folks at the mercy of a rogue werewolf…or as Pearl had stated last night, two werewolves.
That was the kicker.
The odds of two werewolves going rogue at the same time and then being allowed to remain in the area to make two more kills were practically nonexistent. So, what
