Chapter Thirteen

Faith walked over to where I sat and sank down next to me, wrapping her arm around me. “We’re going to figure this out, honey, don’t you worry.”

I didn’t respond, my tears coming thick and fast. I couldn’t stand the thought of something happening to Faith, who’d been so good to me. She and Tim were all the family I had left. All of a sudden, a thoughtful look crossed Faith’s face, followed by a warm smile.

“You know what I just realized? A lot of those people were last seen at the carnival, right?”

I sniffed and wiped away more tears. “Yeah.”

She inclined her head and gave my arm a bracing pat. “There you go. It’s been days since the carnival, and I’m still here.”

My spirits lifted the tiniest amount. “I guess I didn’t think of that. But there’s still something going on with you, even if it’s not related to the disappearances.”

Faith sighed. “I won’t argue with you there. I haven’t been feeling up to par, but if it’s a hex, it should be easy enough to figure out how to remove it. You head on home and get some rest, and I’ll start studying up on hexes.”

My uncertainty must have shown in my face because Faith laughed. “Such a worrywart! Just like Celeste. I’ll be fine, Sage.”

As I drove home, I couldn’t quite put all my fears away. Faith was right that the people who had last been seen at the carnival seemed to disappear at the carnival. But that also didn’t account for the people who weren’t last seen at the carnival. It looked like I was going to have to do some more digging to get to the bottom of this whole thing.

After a restless night with little sleep, I flew out the door the next morning to get to the shop on time. Theresa was waiting by the door, wearing a cheerful smile. Her expression melted into concern as she took in the shadows under my red-rimmed eyes.

“Sage? What’s going on?”

Motioning towards the door with my head, I pulled out my key.

“Come on, I’ll tell you inside.”

After we’d pulled the window shades up and turned on the lights, Theresa folded her arms and stared at me, silently demanding an explanation.

“I went out to Faith’s last night because I was worried about her.”

Theresa stilled, her expression unusually somber. “And?”

“She’s okay, but I know now that she must have been hexed.”

She opened her mouth to protest, but I held up a hand. “I know, she never leaves her house, but you’re forgetting about the carnival.”

Her mouth snapped closed, her eyes going wide. “Crap.”

“Yeah. And remember who we ran into at the carnival?”

Theresa’s eyes drifted closed as she groaned. “Sebastian and Scarlett.”

I pressed my lips together grimly. “Yep. Faith says she’s going to do some reading up on hexes and let me know what she finds.”

I saw Theresa’s tense shoulders relax a little, her arms unfolding as a hopeful smile lit her face. “Faith is the best spellcaster of the last century! If anyone can figure it out, it’s her.
