Xavier and I walked out of the library and crossed the square to the seafront. Not only did he insist on accompanying me to see Mr Bennet, but he also insisted on carrying the book himself. Iâd lost that argument in approximately five seconds despite pointing out that Iâd already touched the book while wearing gloves.
âHow do you know the curse isnât going to harm you?â I held the book out of his reach. âI know youâre a Reaper, but you should think about wearing gloves just in case.â
âI donât have any, and if Reapers could drop dead from touching a simple cursed object, we wouldnât be much good at our jobs.â
âThe curse isnât a simple one, though,â I argued. âYes, I know youâre undead, but reallyâ¦â
Xavierâs hand skimmed my shoulder as he reached for my arm, his fingers snagging the edge of the book. He was much taller than I was, so it was a losing battle on my part.
âYou remember when I walked into the ocean and survived, donât you?â His breath tickled my neck, as cold as the breeze. âI wonât let you be the one to take the risk.â
I relented and dropped the book into his waiting hand. âFine.â
And that was that. We walked the rest of the way to the seafront and entered the curse-breakerâs small shop, while Mr Bennet gave us another scowl from behind the counter.
âWhat is it this time?â he asked.
âI believe this book has a deadly curse on it.â I indicated the book, which Xavier held up so that Mr Bennet could see the cover. âXavier is carrying it because heâs immune, but we think this is the source of a curse which has killed two people so far.â
Mr Bennet looked stonily at me. âGet out.â
âWhat?â I didnât move, but my shoulders tensed when he rose to his feet. âYou donât have to touch it with your bare hands.â
âI refuse to let you bring anything thatâs potentially deadly into my shop.â
âYouâre a curse-breaker,â I pointed out. âThatâs what you do, isnât it?â
âFoolish girl,â he said. âI wouldnât be able to break a curse if I dropped dead the instant I touched it, would I?â
âIâm sure you can break the curse without touching the book,â I said. âCanât you?â
âYou can never be careful enough when it comes to experimental curses.â
âSo you admit the curse was definitely an experimental creation.â Heâd stubbornly refused to give us any useful information before, but two more people were dead, so it grated on my nerves to see him still digging his heels in. âCreated by whom?â
The professor came to mind, but it left the question of why he would put a curse on someone. His interest in magical theory didnât necessarily translate to him wanting to use it in practise, and besides, if the book had been in his hands at the time, how had the first victim met his end?
âHow did your family manage to get a curse put on one of their books, anyway?â Mr Bennet asked.
