Chapter Twelve

Wednesday morning, Tucker woke up before dawn to get a run in before he and Rahul were to head out. Rahul got up with him to handle forms and read through the collected case information, then they each kissed Leif goodbye.

At eight a.m., Rahul pulled his car up in front of a mythic-friendly hotel chain, next to a pair of waiting carriages. The place was about the size of a resort, and it boasted an abundance of flora, open sky, and a more diverse selection of room accommodations for guests. Heavily subsidized by mythic councils, it was pricy to stay at for humans and most mythblooded, but it offered severe discounts to mythic races that couldn't find normal accommodations elsewhere, such as traveling centaurs, elementals, and merfolk.

Tucker wasn't sure whether it was Joseph's arbiter status, mythic council connections, or his druidic gifts that allowed him the cheaper-than-normal hotel rates. Possibly all three. Either way, he was waiting on the stone path for them, his satchel around his shoulder, and he waved a greeting as Rahul and Tucker got out to meet him.

"Good morning, Joseph," Tucker said, shaking his hand. "Sleep alright?"

"I did! It took me until almost midnight to write down all of our findings, but there were these lovely nightingales outside my room, and they obliged me with some lullabies until I fell asleep. And this must be the private investigator."

"Rahul, if you would," he said, reaching out to shake his hand in turn. Just before Joseph grabbed his hand, however, there was a tremble in the ground, and a sudden gust of wind lifted the arbiter's hand up and out of the way. Tucker's sense of smell told him that he wasn't the only one surprised.

Joseph lowered his arm back down, staring at it, then looked up at Rahul, puzzled. Then his face cleared. "That's right, you're a djinn, yes? A fire one?"

"Djinn of fire and light, that's right," Rahul said, frowning.

Joseph gave him an easy smile. "With an inner flame. I do apologize, I think the spirits only saw your flame, and didn't want me to get burned, not realizing that the flame comes surrounded in flesh. Let's try again?"

This time there weren't any magical outbursts, and Rahul chuckled as they shook hands. "Ready to go? And do you want your satchel with you or in the trunk?"

"With me is fine."

Tucker tried to give Joseph the more comfortable front passenger seat, but he would hear nothing of it, citing his smaller form. Tucker contested that statement by shifting into his beagle form, but then Joseph, quick as a flash, picked Tucker up and bodily tossed him into the front seat. Before Joseph could open the back door and claim the rear seat, though, Tucker leapt between the seats, shifted human, and locked the back door. Appearing indignant, Joseph sat in the front with his satchel, but got his revenge by moving the seat as far forward as it would go. Rolling his eyes, Rahul tossed Tucker his shoes that hadn't shifted with him, then set out.
