When Lorenz opened his eyes, he was back in the attic room, the bone-china-cat beside him.

“I never knew all that,” he whispered. “He never told me.”

“He loved you very much. He’d have moved the world to save you.”

“It doesn’t matter now. He’s… gone.”

“Yes, but you are still here. That is what matters.”

Lorenz stared at the cat.

“Dense human.” She rolled her eyes like a pair of dancing moons. “It’s the mirror. The mirror in your heart. It gave you life, but it’s tainted. It’s what keeps you from feeling whole. The dust inside you keeps everyone at bay, locks your feelings up tight. That mirror keeps you trapped.”

A creeping sensation slithered along Lorenz’s skin like a silky snake.

“What do I do?” he asked, shaking away the invisible serpent.

The cat’s eyes glowed so bright, a mischievous twinkle edging into their light. “The mirror taints you. You must remove the mirror.”

A cold bolt of dread pierced Lorenz’s gut and lodged there, the impossibility of the cat’s declaration like a knife striking to his core.

Lorenz chuckled to hide his fear.

“And just how would I do that? I can’t very well rip out my heart.”

The dancing moons of the cat’s eyes rested steadily on his. “That’s exactly what you must do.”
