Iâm walking with Connolly when Hopeâs captor calls. Iâve been expecting this. Time for a check-in. Also time to check on my progress. I tell him Iâm working for Connolly.
âYes, I know,â he says.
âWord travels fast,â I say.
The obvious question is how he knows, but he isnât going to answer that. Even by admitting heâs heard the news, heâs giving me a clue. He has a connection to one of the very limited number of people who know Iâm working for Connolly.
âWe got an invitation to the event tonight,â I say. âYou might have mentioned that. If you want the necklace uncursed, Hope and I will need time with it before we uncurse it.â
âYou arenât uncursing it, Miss Bennett. Your sister is. If that was a hint for me to bring her to the gala, it was clumsily done. She will have all the time she needs with it once Iâve procured the piece.â
So youâre going to the event? I know better than to ask that. Heâll deny it . . . or change his mind about going. Heâs implied heâll be there, and thatâs enough.
I want more hints. Little things he might let slip if we continue speaking. Figures of speech and tonal patterns that a voice manipulator wonât disguise. Yet the longer I keep him talking, the more likely he is to realize what Iâm doing. Better for him to think Iâve cast my die and Iâm doing as he asks.
âIâll still make sure I get a good look at it,â I say. âIâm supposed to be uncursing it for Connolly so heâll expect me to take an active interest. May I at least report my findings to Hope? I can write them down if youâre concerned.â
âIâm not.â
Because youâre already listening in when I talk to her. And, after my last conversation with Hope, youâve dismissed us as a couple of silly âgirlsâ whoâll do as weâre asked.
âMay I speak to her now?â I ask.
âYou may. Five minutes.â
Connolly has been walking beside me, listening in and silently assessing. At that, he motions that heâll go on ahead and give us privacy.
I get my five minutes alone with Hope. Well, relatively alone. Weâre still careful. She slips in a few reminiscences to tell me she really is fine. Thatâs what I need. Itâs all I get, too.
After our call, I need to start getting ready for this evening. Iâve set aside enough time to use the sunken tub though Iâm not really in the mood to enjoy it.
Hopeâs captor will be at the event tonight. Iâm supposed to be on his side, doing his bidding. What if he finds out the truth?
All I need to do is play my role as Connollyâs hired curse weaver. Do that, while not letting Hopeâs captor know Iâm looking for him. That second part will be tougher, but I can pull this off. I need to.
