Chapter 18 BLOOD-BOUND.

Charley tried to scream but silence engulfed her, swelling her tongue so that it filled her mouth and choked her throat.

Her chest heaved and bucked as she fought for breath, her lungs burning as her mind screamed in desperation.

She was dying.

Nothing had prepared her for the agony of knowing her life was about to end, that she had no future, and tears squeezed from her eyelids as red-rimmed darkness took her last conscious thought.

Is this what death is like?

The thought echoed and floated eerily through her mind.

If I’m dead, why am I thinking. Why don’t I feel dead?

A cold, hollow chuckle sent waves of ice through her thoughts.

Who’s there? Where am I? What’s going on?

Charley felt a ripple of fear embrace her and she shuddered as the ice curled through her weightless body.

A body, I still have a body—must be a good sign, surely.

She peered into the darkness, straining to see what was out there.

Why can’t I see anything? Where am I?

Panic swamped over her as she spun around, her arms outreached, her fingers stretching to feel something, anything...

Nothing.

Then something touched her and a scream tore from her frozen mouth. She sobbed in terror as it crept up her arms, wrapping its icy fingers around her flesh, creeping towards her face. She felt it pushing against her lips, forcing her mouth open as it slipped across her tongue and down her throat.

Her fingernails bloodied her lips as she tore frantically at whatever it was that was forcing its way into her body.

Then, it stopped. Shaking and gasping for breath, she slumped forwards and then rolled onto her back. Darkness covered everything and a frozen chill filled her chest.

Welcome, sister. The voice came from her own mouth. I have been waiting.

Terror screamed through her mind.

Who the fuck are you? Get out of me.

Charley punched and slapped at her stomach as she sobbed.

Please leave me alone.

She curled up into a ball, pressed her face into the ground, and wrapped her arms around her head.

Leave me alone, go away, just let me die.

Another chuckle forced its way out of her lips.

I cannot leave.

Why not?

Because I am you.

A shudder ran through her body.

“You can’t be me,” she whispered into the darkness. Anger momentarily pushed the fear away. “I’m not whatever or whoever you are.”

Yes, you are. I exist deep within you. I am in your anger, your fear, your worst nightmares. You cannot escape me. I am the darkness and I will have your soul. It is inevitable. You are me; I am you. It is how it is destined to be.

“No,” Charley screamed into the shadows. “I am not whatever filthy thing you are—I will never be that, no matter what you say about my destiny. I am who I choose to be, not what someone or something else forces me to be.”

You can fight it as much as you like, little sister, but you are mine. I claim you and there is nothing you can do. You belong to the darkness.
