Chapter Six

A Parting of Ways

Yasmeen was back in her room and had just heard the watch cry midnight when a soft knock came at her door. She didn’t expect anyone and was surprised.

“Come in,” she called, as thoughts of her father came to mind.

“Does my lady need a drink?” Lath asked her, with a pitcher of water in his hand.

Although surprised, she understood and followed his lead.

“Yes, thank you very much,” she responded.

He lowered the pitcher to her bedside table. He then moved closer and took her hands to kiss them tenderly.

“Is what you told me in the garden true?” he whispered.

“I would never have said it if it was not true,” she murmured breathlessly.

He again raised her hands to his lips, lovingly. He closed his eyes softly as a comfortable silence filled the room.

Her father was right. He did love her, and he had come to her. All of a sudden, she marveled at the new wonderful feeling that engulfed her.

His touch was different in some wonderful way; it made her whole. She paused to consider, ‘But is it because I like him so much, or because … could it be? He healed me, I am sure he did. How can I know for sure? Dadda will know.’

She waited for him to raise his head again.

“Lath,” she began, with a small smile that grew bigger, “I believe that you are the one for whom we have searched for so long.”

His reaction, however, was puzzling. He just looked at her and didn’t respond, but his face seemed to contort in pain.

“We have to tell my father,” she added. “He will know better than me.” She tugged his hand in an effort to lead him to her father’s room.

He resisted and she wondered why. “Lath?”

“I’m sorry I came,” he said, as he moved a step away from her. “Please forgive me.”

He tried to free his hands, but she resisted. She had found him and wouldn’t let him go again.

“Please do not go,” she begged him, “we need to talk.”

“About what, my lady?” he asked with a sad face.

“You need to come back with us, to my people. We have no time to lose,” she exclaimed.

“That’s impossible, my lady,” he retorted and her heart broke, “I need to stay.”

“Please come see my father, for me,”

The more she tried, the more he resisted.

“I thought you said you loved me? Yet, you want not to be with me? I understand not your love. I have to go back to my people. I cannot stay here with you,” she finally said.

“I’m sorry,” he told her, and pulled his hand away from hers, “Good night, my lady.”

The forgotten pitcher was left on the stand as he disappeared, closing the door behind him without another glance at her.

“Lath, wait,” she cried, but he didn’t answer.

“What did I do that was so wrong? Why will he not help us?” she wondered once and again. “We need him. Why can he not understand that?” She spent all that night in turmoil, by the window.
